Baby food maker

So now that I'm a week away from having a 6 month old, and I'm not 100% convinced that BLW is for us, I was wondering what you ladies who plan to make your own baby food are using? We have a cuisinart food processor that is huge, but I was looking into the baby breeza that steams and purées the food at the touch of a button. Any btdt moms want to weigh in? I want to take advantage of any Black Friday deals if this is something we plan to get. Thanks!

  • I started making last weekend and just use our regular blender. I made butternut squash, sweet potatoes and green beans. None require a special blender. I boiled/steamed/roasted the veggie then blended for a few seconds and all done. No room for extra stuff!

  • We were just given a hand-me-down breeza last night so I haven't used it yet. My LO is a ways away from 6 months still, but some produce is on such good sales for thanksgiving that I started making a few purées and freezing them. I have been steaming them on the stove and then using an immersion blender to purée the food. I have the one below and absolutely love it. It does a million things and doesn't take up any counter space.

  • With DS1 I just steamed and roasted things using my oven and stove and then used an immersion blender, or a fork or blender depending on how much of something I had. It was so easy honestly, and you get so much out of one session for a baby that I couldn't see buying something baby-specific. For example one butternut squash got me like 2 trays of ice cubes (1 oz servings) and that is like a weeks worth of food even for a big eater. So I only ended up making purees and freezing cubes like 3 times (I would just have 4-5 different things made in a session) and I had so much it easily got us through the purees phase.

  • Good to know not to splurge on the baby food maker. Thanks!

I used our regular blender last night for the peas. (frozen ones from Trader Joe's). I steamed them in the microwave and then blended. yes, it's a PIA because the blender is so big, but I don't have room for another piece of kitchen equipment. :)
Get thee an immersion blender! Fits in our drawer and is a staple even with our toddler. I'm always blending random veggies into yogurt and need a small serving.

  • Are any of you nursing mommies mixing a little BM with your puréed foods? LO will be 6 months in 2 weeks! Yikes! I can't believe we are trying foods soon!

I've done fork mashed avocado, banana and oven baked sweet potatoes and to thin them out, I've been mixing it w a little bit of breastmilk.

Now I feel more like a silly FTM than ever with my brand new pricey, frenchy Beaba. I don't think I have the Pottery Barn receipt anymore.
ETA I'm going to try to return it anyways, we have a food processor, stick blender and regular blender already. Geez Louise.

  • So far I've only used a fork for avocado and sizeable batch of sweet potato. DD actually loved watching me mash the sweet potato. The immersion blender we have came with a mini food professor attachment so I plan on using that or the blender depending on how much I'm making. A friend of mine really liked her baby bullet, but said she would not have paid for it herself (it was a gift).

  • I should probably know this but what does BLW mean?

Baby led weaning. Just mashing up what you eat usually and letting baby eat real food, no purees.

We kind of did a mix and match of this and purees.

  • I have the Baby Bullet and it sucks. It doesn't blend well at all and you'd think I would have learned my lesson after buying the regular Magic Bullet.

  • Microwave or oven, a fork and a cheap food processor makes for one happy baby. I will recommend two products though: Infantino Squeeze Station to make your own pouches and this https://www.amazon.com/Freshfoods-78963-Mash-Serve-Bowl/dp/B006Z6E8AG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385406980&sr=8-1&keywords=masher+bowl+baby. We do all of our bananas, avocados, etc. in this. It's awesome.

We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.

Tell me more about this squeeze station.  My oldest ate pouches like whoa and this thing looks cool.  Pros? Cons?  What have you made?

Yes, please! How do the avocados fare? Do they oxidize like usual or stay longer?

It's the product I tell everyone to get! It's easy to use, like seriously easy, and even easier to clean. I've made butternut squash, apples a few times, (I tried three different kinds to try to get him to like them, no go.) sweet potatoes and sweet peas. Everything worked great, and the pouches freeze really well. I also bought the little holder they go into, so they all store easily. (Honestly, I would make something every day it's so much fun. Ha.) I also know that it will work well as he grows, even after purees. I'll be able to make my own yogurt and applesauce pouches for him. As far as the avocado, I would do it fresh all the time, because it does turn black almost immediately, even with freezing. I wouldn't freeze bananas either, because both are so easy to do with the masher fresh. Hope that helps.
