Would you rather..

Just for fun, would you rather personally have a popular top 10 name or a lesser known name from outside the top 1,000?

My husband and I disagree, he thinks it's better to have a well known normal name even if it is super popular because people would never bat an eyelash at it or comment on it. I tend to like names that are more 'out there' and less known, but I grew up hating my super common name and being known as First name Last initial throughout school. Most of the names I like are the kind that would lead to a comment or question about it when people first hear it, which could be a good or bad thing.

I think there are pros and cons to both, so what's your opinion?

  • It depends on the name like pp said.
When I meet a child under the age of 5 and the mom says the child's name is Addy/Maddy/Abby/or some variation of Aiden I have to stop myself from saying 'of course it is.' So I wouldn't want people to have that reaction to my child's name. I'd definitely prefer to have a less known name as long as it's a real name and spelled correctly.

  • I voted for outside the top 1,000 because our LN is among the 10 most common so having an overused FN leads to lots of confusion as an adult.

Only DD's name is actually outside the top 1000. Most of the girl names I like are outside of the top 1000 even though they aren't that uncommon, It is just that there is a shitton of dumbass spellings for girl names that push normal girl names that are properly spelled way down the list.

  • SS - somewhere between 10 and 1000. I prefer familiar, and outside the top 1000 may risk being too unfamiliar. And I hate the idea of having a name that looks like I, or I guess in this instance, my parents were trying too hard to be different. And I'd prefer not a top 10 because most of those I'm just so sick of hearing! But I voted top 10, because I value familiar enough to consider that the lesser of the evils (not that either option is that evil)

  • Oooh good one! I don't know! I think I'm a 200-300 girl...so another SS! The top ten is hurting right now IMO.

  • I voted outside 1000, but I'm another 200 or so girl myself. I want unusual enough that you don't see many, but recognizable. For example, my dd is Hillary. Everybody knows what it is and how to pronounce it, but we don't meet very dang many others.

I will go higher for boys, in fact our boy name would be Anthony which is really way to high for my liking, but dh wants to name a son after his late brother and that's more important. For girls there is nothing on God's green earth that would get me into the top 10 though.

  • I voted for outside the 1000. I'm a Katrina and as much as I hated growing up in the 80's and never findin my name on any personalized stuff, I grew to like the fact that I had a different name. Mind you my mother was a huge Katrina and the waves fan..

I actually think I am SS BUT I voted for out of top 1000.  As a Jennifer of the 80/90's I hated having a ton of classmates with the same name.  HOWEVER I wouldn't want a unique or made up name either that I was always correcting people.   So as long as the 1000+ name was recognizable and needed minimal explanation I would pick that, if it didn't at least the top 10 people would know.

This. I'm a Lindsay from mid 80's, and absolutely hated being one of four in each class growing up. You get sick of hearing your own name!

  • I voted out of 1000 but I'm more outside the top 100 type of person. Although I love some of the boys names in the top 10 like Noah and Aiden. DS is Reed which was like 394 according to SSA but from namenerds, that take into account all spellings, it's like 192, but he's named after my father so the popularity was my last concerned. The next round of baby names we have are also family names and aren't cracking top 500 but are all easily to recognize just not common place anymore/slightly ethnic. I think that people put way too much stock on rank. There are so many names out there so even top 10 names aren't nearly as common as a top name 25 years ago or even 100 years ago when everyone was John and Mary.
  • I voted out of 1000 but, I would really just say somewhere out side top 50.

  • I have an out there name and when I was a kid I always wished my name was Ashley or Heather or something more common.  Now I'm glad it's unique.  My husband has a really common name and he likes more uncommon ones because he was one of about 10-15 with the same name in his graduating class.

  • rather pick a more unique name, as long as it's not too unique, and people can pronounce it.
some examples that aren't in the top 1,000 is:

  • I have a very common name, and it's never bothered me. My kids both have top 10 names (Sophia & Ethan) and obviously I'm cool with it. We chose the names because we loved them. Our last name is very uncommon though, so we won't ever have to worry about someone else having the same exact name. If our last name were a really common one, we probably would have chosen something less popular for first names.
