Success with a Gluten Free diet?

I've been considering the idea of going gluten free in preparation for my next IVF cycle. I have had quite a few people tell me their success was due to their switch to a gluten free diet. Personally, I can't find any research that suggests this would be the case unless you have an intolerance to gluten or celiacs. Of which I have neither. I eat a pretty clean diet currently and believe I am nurishing my body correctly, but there's always the thought of could I be doing more or better nutrionally. So I continue to research and everytime I find there is no evidence that people without issues would benefit or need to do this.

Anyone have any thoughts on G-Free diets positive or negative in regards to IF?

Re: Success with a Gluten Free diet?

  • I had a specialist into herbs and stuff also tell me to reduce gluten. She said although I may not have an allergy, I have an intolerance??? I didn't research it but she assured me there was research out there about the gluten/infertility connection. I don't what to think.........

  • My hubby and I have been eating gluten/carb free for weight loss a couple of years now and have lost lots of weight on it, which was good.  But I can't really say it has been beneficial for fertility, I got pregnant last December but lost it in January, and have yet to get another BFP in the 10 months since.  Of course I'm just one person and results can be different for everyone, but I don't think any one thing, diet or otherwise, is going to be a magic fertility bullet.

    All ALers welcome!

  • I was on paleo in May and got pregnant (m/c in June) for the first time ever. Then, we started up again in September/October and my fertility levels had increased by November. I think I actually got pregnant/miscarried again this month, but I'm not sure yet.) I think, if anything, changing our habits in these ways allows our bodies to absorb nutrients from the healthy foods, regulate insulin levels, etc., which can help with fertility. I think there's SOMETHING to it, but I can't explain what it is....

  • We are getting ready to start GF.  I'm in the research phase right now. I'm fine but DH seems to have some suspected issues so we are going to do it together (yay?).  I've never thought about this as a connection with IF but I think like anything else that can't easily be quantified (acupuncture, meditation, decreasing stress - Argh!) why wouldn't it play a role in fertility if it is an issue for you?

I'm really considering starting after Thanksgiving because I just love that huge, disgusting meal too much.

  • I am GF, mostly, I don't have an intolerance or allergy. But I read research that the gluten can affect autoimmune response (specifically thyroid) so I stay GF (mostly) and then I dont have to keep upping my med dosage. I haven't seen anything r/t fertility. But I hadnt looked either.

  • GF isn't a cure all but if you have autoimmune issue it can help.  A low carb diet is the best according to most RE's for better success... By doing Low Carb you usually can cut out most gluten fairly easily anyways....

    good luck!
