Going out in the cold

edited November 2013 in October 2013 Moms
I can't remember if this has been discussed before and I'm mobile so I can't search.

What are you dressing your LO's in when you go out? Usually I just put her in a long sleeve shirt & pants, socks and a hat and I have a fleece wrap around cover for her car seat that I zip up. If I put a jacket or snow suit on I'm afraid she is going to overheat. She is only outside for a matter of a few minutes when we get out of the car to go into a store. Other then the time it takes to get out of te car and into the store she is in the heat.

I'm in MD and it's now officially freezing. Am I under dressing her if I don't put a jacket or full body zip up snow suit thing on her? She does have the fleece/fur car seat cover thing on her.

That's what I put my LO in. A onesie with a long sleeve onesie over it, sweatpants, socks, winter hat, mittens and then the Jolly Jumper cover... which is the single best item I purchased. I live in the mountains of Montana and it's plenty for the short time we are outside.
He always feels very toasty when I take him out of the car seat.

  • I live in Louisiana and it is just now getting cold but I too have been wondering about this. We have been putting LO in the footed outfits since those seem to be warmer than just his pants. Then we put on a hat and after buckled in we put a warmer blanket on him and throw a blanket over the top of the carseat to block wind. I think what you are doing is just fine. Once he actually fits into his pants (still too long on him) that is exactly how I will be dressing LO.
  • My kids never wear a jacket of any sort in their car seat (neither do I! ) I dress them normally (which now is pants and a long sleeve.) Then I tuck a blanket around the baby AFTER I have strapped her in her car seat. This morning it is 19 out so I tucked a second blanket around her. I pull a blanket to hang down from her canopy before we step outside.

  • I put a fleece snp, hat and blanket. I haven't used the car seat cover thing yet.

  • I am using a Cozy right now and dressing him in warm clothes but not too bulky. It is cold this week in KY so I just started using the Cozy. Works great!

  • Yes no big jackets in the carseat! I dress him normally in long sleeve top and pants. We have a fleece jacket with a hood that he wears if super cold...layers are best plus fleece is safe for a carseat bc it doesn't compress. I also have a bundle me (the kind that goes over the carseat) and use a blanket to cover if we take him out, but we usually just transport in and out in the carseat.

  • I'm in New England and dress him in pants, a long-sleeve shirt, socks, and a hat. Then I cover the infant seat with a carseat cover that goes over the seat and zips up leaving only his face exposed.

This is what I do too.  OP, I'm in DE so we have the same weather going on.  I dress DS normally for the winter (onesie, socks, sleeper or outfit) and put him in the carseat.  After he's strapped in, I tuck a receiving blanket around his chest/legs and put a hat on him.  Then I drape a thicker blanket on top of him and make sure his hands are covered up (it's from Pottery Barn Kids, but we got it when DD was born  I think they call it a stroller blanket?  It's plushy like fleece).

Considering the walk from the house to the car is about 20 feet, and then he's outside for about 1-2 minutes tops while we walk from the car to the entrance of our destination, I'm not worried about him being too cold.  He's actually toasty warm when I take off the blanket when we get inside.

  • I live in DC, and it's getting cold here. We do a lot of walking, so I've been wondering about this myself. I usually do a onesie, fleece footed sleeper, hat, and blanket in the stroller, with the canopies covering her to block the wind.

What do you use if LO is in a baby carrier? I don't want her to overheat with my body heat, but it's so cold out!

Has anyone used the Rain or Shine Kids pouch or blanket? The pouch can be used on a carrier, car seat or stroller and it's water/wind proof so I like that. But at $68, it's kind of pricey.

  • I stress about this too!

I had her out and about in the carrier this weekend, so cold and windy. We did, onesie, warm footed pjs, added furry/flannel PJ like thing, hat and gloves. I then wore my dh's bomber jacket that I can half zip around us both. After about 10 minute walk she was hot but comfy.

Same thing here although I'll tuck a blanket around her under the cover. Especially this weekend when the wibdchill was around 0.
I don't take her out unless I have to usually. I think cabin fever will set in soon.

I'm in your neck of the woods. When I take her out in the ergo I use the infant insert, dress her in footies and place a hat on her head. If it is windy (like yesterday) I'll wrap a fleece blanketand tuck it in as needed. She's always super warm because of my body heat, I make sure her hands and feet are tucked in and there's been no problem.
