Naming Kids Is Hard, Yo

With DD we had a full girl's name and full boy's name picked out waiting for our 20w u/s and bam, there she was.

This time, there's nothing. I don't love the boy name we had for DD anymore (Ethan James) though DH still likes it. I've been scouring for normal names that I haven't seen used in a while and finding nothing I like, and those I DO find have already been taken by close relatives in DH's huge family lol.

I've got Evan (my favorite so far), Scott (DH vetoes), Alexander, Liam (I'm hesitant). For middle names, family names of Jacob, Shaun, Christopher, James, Harold, Earl, Edward.

Middle name seems to be no big deal, but I'm at a loss for first names! Why is this so tough the second time? lol

  • It's our first time and we still don't have a name either.  It's a super difficult choice.

I had more ideas for a girl this time than for a boy! Last time was opposite. I guess whichever names "come to me" must mean I'm having the opposite :P lol

  • Aaron was on my list, DH vetoed it lol. I like it a lot!

It's definitely one of the stronger possibilities. We have a single syllable last name, so I've been mulling them all over to see which combo I like the best haha! But that combo covers a ton of relatives and I can imagine on an adult haha

  • It is really hard!  We had liked Evelyn for DD, but my SIL ended up using it a few months before she was born so we switched to Ellinor which I like way more now.

Xavier was the only boy's name we ever really agreed on, we liked it when we had DD and it was really the only name we seriously considered the second time around.  We never came up with any solid girl names last time (team green) so it was lucky we had a boy!  The middle name was easy for him, Leo is MH's, FIL's and my Dad's middle name!  So we hit everyone in one go.

Now this time, we are struggling with both.  I think we'll need to meet the baby in order to make a real decision - that was pretty much what we did with the others too we just had more solid front runners :)

From your names I like Evan and Alexander best - Liam is nice but it's SOOOO popular right now.  Names we like this time around are Ian, Grayson and Logan.  Logan is more on the popular side for my taste, but it seems to be on a downward trend the last couple of years.  Grayson is little trendy, but we're still considering it since we don't have a lot of options!  I just haven't heard a name that I've loved and immediately feels like the right one, ya know?  I keep waiting, but we might have to settle for one we like a lot and hope the baby grows into it.

  • I love the name Alexander and we plan on using it as a middle name, but I'm second guessing it since that's prince George's middle name and will probably end up becoming very popular. I second PP who said Evan James.

Ian has been discussed but I don't think DH likes it, Grayson is one I loved but my SIL beat us to it haha, and Logan I had but another DH veto lol!

    Great minds think alike ;D

  • Our front runners right now are almost exactly the same as OP- Scott, Evan, Connor, dean, Dane, Ethan, Ian, Lane, Reed, Owen.

  • We have no name for a boy... Nothing, if it's a boy it'll probably have no name. We have an idea for girls names, but nothing set in stone and no middle name. She may not even get a middle name and this rate.

  • No doubt. We have one boy name set in stone... The other boy? Meh... It changes daily.

  • I really love the name Sean. I don't like the spellings Shaun or Shawn so much, but with the traditional spelling Sean "feels" similar to Liam to me. I think that'd be a great first name!

  • @pepperedmoth

My mom would like me to consider it cuz it's the middle name of my older brother who passed of SIDS at 17 days. I didn't know him, but she said it would be nice if we could pass it on. I haven't really found a combo I like, so it may wait if we have another DS? I dunno :S

Being a grownup is hard :P lol

  • This was so hard for us too. If LO was a boy he was going to be Miles Ian. But I got the DD I was hoping for, and coming up with her name was so hard

  • Clearly our group does not have the terrible name problem, but I just saw this on FB and had to share

  • I was just thinking about boys names earlier. We were told it looks like were having a girl at our 20 wk ultrasound, but I was told I was having a boy at my daughters 17 wk ultrasound. DS we had an elective 4D cos the sonographer didn't sound confident.
We have a girls name- maybe I should have a boys name just in case too?
I like Nate, fletcher and Milton but DS's name is unusual (zephyr) so I would need something more like that.
Anyway, other than those three names- I got nothin' so I'm really not much help!!!
  • Choosing names is so hard! Before we got our BFP we were set on names... Now they've gone out the window and we can't decide!! We have James for a boys first name for sure (DH's mn) but the middle name keeps changing then Rose for a girls mn but no first name! I have just thought how hard it would be if we were having twins! Double the confusion, also once they are out what happens if they don't suit the names or you can't decided which one is which! Aghhhhh! I didn't realise it would be so hard! Definitely no 'modern' spellings for us and more traditional names but even then there's hundreds to choose from - seems there's a new name on the list every day
