Newborn shakes

I did a search via mobile and didn't see anything posted about this so forgive me if someone already did.

This is for the STM or moms who have LO's on the outside already.

Has anyone noticed their baby shaking for no reason? My LO does this a lot and has been since she was born 8 days ago. She was 39 weeks exactly the day she was born. The shaking only lasts a few seconds whether she's asleep or awake. If she doesn't when she's asleep sometimes her eyes will crack open a bit and you only see the white of her eyes. Or her eyes open up and her eyes are rolled back

I brought this up to ped and he said it was normal but I'm still worried that it could be something else
Like seizures...? I'm going to call
Dr and discuss this again just to be sure but I'd like to hear from Others with more newborn experience.

TIA!

Re: Newborn shakes

  • I believe it has to do with their underdeveloped nervous systems and it is normal, though sometimes weird or freaky to watch! Our pedi told us seizures would probably include rigidity and bluish lips/face. They also would not be able to be roused out of it. It sounds like what your LO is experiencing is normal. Hope that helps!

  • Normal! #3 and (currently) #4 had/have it. #3 got over it in 4-6 weeks? #4 is five weeks old and is still doing it. Same like a PP said, due to immature systems, will go away on it's own.

However, #4 also had 3 seizure-like activities in the last 2 weeks.

If your LO is jerking and DOESNT STOP when you hold their arms/legs, I'd go in to check. If possible, video tape it to show what you saw - better than just describing it.

  • Yes, it's normal and pp was correct. Your LO will be fine and will outgrow it. Easier said than done but try to listen to the Dr and not google crap!!!

  • My son's legs do this. My pediatrician said when it happens I should press my hand down on this legs...it should stop from the slight pressure I apply. That's what will tell me that's it's just a reflex/part of stretching/nothing serious, etc. If it were a seizure! the pressure of my hand would never be able to stop it.
