For those who have been induced...?

I'm going in for a scheduled induction tomorrow night at 39 weeks due to high BP. I have no problems with the idea of being induced because the doctors think she will be better off at this point on the outside!

But my body is showing NO signs that she is ready. She has not dropped or engaged, I have tons and tons of Braxton hicks but no real contractions. I am not dilated and my cervix is still thick. They are starting out tomorrow night with "cervical ripening" and then starting pitocin Tuesday morning I guess.

My question for those who have been induced: anyone go in with all of these things against them and have the induction work? I don't WANT a csection but it seems like the odds are stacked against me and I will end up having one anyways after going through the whole induction process. I am a FTM and just getting verrrrry anxious about the whole thing! I trust whatever my doctors say to do but am looking for any first hand experiences to give me hope!

Re: For those who have been induced...?

  • Me. Zero dilation. Long, thick cervix. My induction went smoothly. Good luck!

  • With DD1, I had an emergency induction at 35w for pre-e and like you, started out with NO progress.  The whole thing took about 27 hours and they used Cervadil, pitocin, and I also had to be on magnesium sulfate due to my BP.  I was REALLY sick, so I don't remember a lot of it.  She needed a little time in the nursery after birth (no NICU) to recover but she was healthier than I was.

This time around with DD2, I had to be induced again at 37w for pre-e sneaking up again.  They didn't hesitate to wait this time, especially since I made it further in the pregnancy than I did with my first.  I was starting to contract and I was 2cm and 70% effaced but they still used a Foley bulb to dilate my cervix to 4cm.  That SUCKED and hurt a lot.  I was on pitocin and magnesium again this time but I was much healthier.  This one ended up taking 22 hours, even with progress.  Unfortunately, the foley bulb made her go upwards in my uterus and she didn't want to come back down so I kept stalling out.  Very frustrating.

Sorry for the novel but wanted to give you some insight in to my experience having done it twice now.  It'll be alright.  I was convinced this last one was going to end in a c-section but it ended up working and I only pushed for 10 minutes.  Good luck to you!

  • I was induced at 38 weeks with my daughter. I was "extremely unfavorable" with no dilation or effacement whatsoever. They placed the cervadil and that was it for me. My body flew into labor and 5 hours later we were holding our baby girl.
Try not to freak out...you could very well have the vaginal delivery you want!

  • Thats how things went with DS. It worked out well for me! Hope you have the same luck! I would hold out on letting them break your water for a while and make sure you are progressing. They will push a section if they break your water and you don't deliver within 24 hrs because of infection risk. If they don't break your water you can be on the pit for as long as it takes!! Good luck!!!
  • Thank you ladies! These give me some hope going into tonight that it might work....I am not against a csection if that's what needs to be done! I'm more afraid of an emergency c because baby is in distress or something like that!
  • Good luck with your induction. I'm glad other people were able to calm your nerves a bit :-)

  • I showed no signs of being ready and then my water broke.  I was induced at the hospital.
Once they induced me things moved very fast.  I think things will be great.
