Toddler bed, twin or full bed?

Our crib does not convert so we are looking into beds for my DS. Both of my sisters put their kids straight into full beds with rails and I always loved that idea because you're not having to buy them a new bed all the time, they are roomy enough so I can crawl in there if I need too and my niece has been in the same bed for 10 years. But I feel like a full bed would take up so much room I would not have enough space for his train table and chest of drawers

Re: Toddler bed, twin or full bed?

  • We went with a twin. We live in a 2 bd apartment and don't have room for a full, and we were giving our crib to my sister so couldn't convert to a toddler bed. It seemed silly to spend money on a toddler bed that would only last a couple years, so we just went with a twin with a rail.

Toddler beds are a waste of $$, IMO. DD1 went into a full, DD2 into a twin bunk bed.

No rails for us. They figured out pretty quickly what the edge of the bed felt like and they never fall out.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • We went for a twin for DS. He wont outgrow that for a long time. Plus right now his room isn't big so a twin is perfect. He has room for his drawers, bookshelf, toy chest & room to play. Once we move, to a bigger place hopefully, we will buy him a full. But for now & awhile a twin makes sense.

  • Our crib converted to a toddler bed but now that DD is potty trained DH and I are talking about getting her "big girl" furniture soon. We're looking into a twin daybed with a trundle. Her room isn't huge and I feel like a full would leave her room feeling cramped, but with a trundle she could have the extra sleeping space for sleepovers, etc in the future.

  • Twin with trundle is a good option.
  • I bought a toddler bed on clearance for $50(orig 180). I have a futon in LO's room where company sleeps. IMO spending $50 now was a lot cheaper than financing a trundle bed plus a mattress & all new sheets 'n blankets. LO also has a small room and it is only a two bedroom town home so I can't give up the guest space. I figured I could probably sell the bed in several years and get most of my money back. Also, I liked the idea of her staying on a waterproof mattress until she doesn't have accidents at night anymore. Easier clean up and disinfecting.  She's good during nap time but not overnight yet.
  • We also have a twin bed (no rail because she never once fell out of her toddler bed that she had been in from about 1.5-2.5 years).  The only way I would choose a full bed is if you need it for other purposes (for example, if you need a place for guests when they visit).

  • DS went from crib to twin bed, with rails b/c he STILL falls out if we are visiting family and not sleeping with a rail on the bed (other side is against the wall). DD will go from crib to twin bed AND DS will get her convertable crib full bed. He has the bigger room and it will work.

I would easily say get the twin and leave room for the train table and toys. He's going to get more out of play than an bigger bed. That's the route we're going for DD's room. More room to play.

We have her in her (converted crib) toddler bed now but have her big girl bed ready for her too.  We got her a twin with a trundle.  This one actually and it's really nice and DH said it was really easy to put together.

It's really quite tall because of the drawers and the trundle but we love the extra storage space and DD doesn't mind the height.  We plan on just pulling the trundle out a bit for her to climb up on until she gets bigger and can get up there on her own, and we'll use a bed rail for a while.

That's the same bed we were looking at getting for DD when she's ready for her big girl bed.

  • We have a full sized bed in DS room. It was given to is, so we figured what the heck. We have a bed rail up on one side .

  • My kids went right into twin beds. We used these foam wedges called Bed Bug Bumpers instead of rails https://gobedbug.com

  • We just switched to a twin/ day bed. We have a magic bumper under the sheet so he can't roll out. It was a surprisingly easy transition!

  • We went from crib to queen... we have the space and we bought it as a queen set and got a separate crib to match because I thought all the baby furniture was ridiculously over priced for the quality.

Crib could've been made into a toddler bed, but we went on vacation and he did fine in a bed with a rail and we just didn't feel like doing the transition twice, so we didn't bother.

The bonus has been that if he's sick or up at night we can crawl in with him and actually be comfortable! HOORAY!

FWIW - we bought rails but they were a waste of money.  We seriously started leaving the side we put him in /out of down permanently about a week in.
  • We will be going from her crib to a full size bed. We have big bedrooms so space is not a problem. I agree with the others, toddler beds are cute but a waste of money.

  • Our five year old is in a single captains bed- which means it has two rows of drawers underneath and I was able to take the dresser out of his room. It has a bookcase headboard so he doesn't need a side table and I put it against the wall with a pool noodle under the sheet on the open side (he is old enough not to fall out but it's so high up it feels cozier. Meanwhile little brother (2 1/2 yrs) is in his converted crib with a pool noodle under the sheets as well (he was falling out of bed regularly). I would have gone straight to a regular bed if his crib didn't convert. Still deciding if we will get him a matching captains bed so the boys can share a room or convert his crib to a full size bed. With the twin against the wall there is plenty of space for me to cuddle my huge five year old. Oh and also there is a door at the foot of the bed so he can clib under there and store stuff- or inhis case have a special hang out spot.
