You'll let me go how long??!?!

So, I'm 32.4 weeks with b/g twins, measuring about 38 weeks... Ugh, looks like I got the kind of doc who will let the babies come when they come. Now I know it's a good thing to let them cook, but good grief! I guess going into this I figured she'd induce at least at 38 weeks, but to think I could possibly go 40 or longer makes me want to cry! I have had an incredibly "easy" pregnancy and she sees no reason to induce. Please tell me these babies won't come at 40 weeks! I can barely walk, breathe, move. I'm exhausted and I'm getting so worried these babies will wait around as long as they can! I want them to be good and healthy (so of course I don't want them to come early), but the thought of being pregnant that much longer scares the hell out of me!

Re: You'll let me go how long??!?!

  • Are you saying that your dr won't induce around 38 weeks? They will just let you go as long as they want to stay in there??
I'll be be 38 weeks tomorrow (I have no idea how far ahead I am measuring because my dr never really told me) but they won't let me go much past that. I have my scheduled csection on Thursday! Ya, it gets really exhausting carrying around so much belly weight but it's not bad, especially if you've had a good pregnancy! Believe me, I want these Guys out now but I'm glad they have stayed in so long because they will be healthier! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!!

  • Ugh - I feel for you!  I was miserable by 38 weeks.  But my induction didn't go so well.  My doctor tried to induce me at 38 weeks and the babies still wouldn't come.  I sat in the hospital for 4.5 days getting induction drugs and they just weren't coming out!  They couldn't get me to dilate.  We finally had to do csection because baby A's heartrate was dropping from all the contrations and I wasn't progressing fast enough to risk continuing with a vaginal delivery.  I sometimes wonder if we'd have let them come in their own time if the delivery might have gone more smoothly.

Just had this same convo with my dr. I have had a very easy, drama free pregnancy, and am still walking and working at nearly 31 weeks. Last week I saw my OB who said "Jan 16" was our drop dead date (39 weeks) instead of the 38 weeks he had been saying all along. My MFM was so pleased with things, he didn't make my next appointment until 35 weeks!!

So, scheduled C at 39 weeks now for me. I know how you feel - it sucks just not knowing when its going to happen. I hope they decide to come sooner than 40 for you, and frankly the average is 35 weeks so at least you can hang on to that!! (though there are a few women on here who went to 40!!)

  • There is a big push now to not do inductions or c-sections before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason (like Pre-X) so maybe thats part of why your doctor isn't talking about it.

Moral of the story....don't worry about it now.  They have their policies, and it's unlikely you'll make it to 40w.
Hah yes this as well - my doc keeps saying he wont do anything until 39 weeks, but then laughs at us and says they will likely come on their own at xmas. (36 weeks)

  • Yeah, my doc as certain I'd deliver before any c-section date she set and she was correct!  I had a scheduled date at 37w3d and delivered at 35w6d, one day shy of my personal goal.  Granted, I was an emergency c-section due to pre-E, but they would have come within the next day or two anyway.  I was in early labor and dilated 3-4cm at the time of my section.

Don't worry too much about going too long, they will come when they want to, need to, or when your body is done.  That's why we get such close monitoring at the end.

What's the phrase?  Don't borrow trouble.  Just try to rest and relax as best you can.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Are you seeing an MFM as well? My OB had a similar mindset (wanted to wait until 39+ weeks), but relied on my MFM to make the call. My MFM told my OB to induce at 36 weeks for other reasons, but would have at 38 weeks even if everything was going well.

Is there?!? I just figured I got some hippie-type doctor who is also somewhat of a  sadist!

Great to hear! My doc didn't seem so confident. She told me that she has delivered twins at 40 weeks, although it's not often. She attempted to calm me by reminding me that I'm small and they'll likely run out of room by then

No, I'm not seeing an MFM. I'm ok with waiting until the babies are ready, but an end date would be nice, even if it is unrealistic. And by end date, I don't mean my "due date" lol!

I will be the person who tells you it is possible to be pregnant at 40 weeks.  I was induced at 39w4d and didn't deliver until 40w0d because they were so comfy.  I had a picture perfect pregnancy.  My girls were delivered vaginally 38 mins apart.  My only regret is that I let them induce me, as much as I was done being pregnant I would have preferred the girls come on their own because the induction part sucked.
Oh goodness, I admire you so much right now!

Very much so. I think another poster commented on the brain development between 38 and 39 weeks but there is also decreased risk of respiratory issues, glucose instability and temperature instability the closer they are 39 weeks. This is the position statement from ACOG and the Society of MFMs. Obviously, many babies do great when before that point and if your babies need to be born, they need to be born. But no need to hurry it along just because :)
My hospital won't even let a doctor put an elective c-section or induction on the books at less than 39 weeks any more.

  • It's hard not having an end date to look towards, but I don't think even 39w is that crazy for an un-complicated pg. That's how long all my drs were willing to let me go (before some minor complications at 32w, then it was bumped up to 37w).

At the end of the day, my water broke at work at 34w and they needed 2 weeks in the NICU.

  • I forgot this whole conversation when I was at the MFM.  She told me that she would probably induce at 38 weeks or so because something about research showing that it was potentially better for them?  Twins or more only on the statement she made.  Dunno.. I do agree an end date is nice to have.. the light at the end of this long long long long long tunnel.  (says the person all the way back at 18 weeks :p )

  • My OB was looking to induce no later than 38 weeks. My personal goal was to get to 37weeks. I was off by about 2.5 weeks. I had to deliver at 34+4 due to pre-e, HELLP and IUGR.

  • My doc took the same mode of thinking however, she knew that I wasn't going to make it to 38 or 40 weeks.  She just didn't want to set a date at 33 wks for something she knew wasn't going to happen more than a month down the line.  GL-I know you feel awful.  You'll feel immediately better when those babies are born so, just know that there is relief in sight.

  • That doesn't seem that horrible for twins. I have triplets and they set up a C for 37 weeks.I thought they were calling the wrong person! I didn't even make it 37 weeks with one!
  • Thanks Ladies, sorry I didn't reply sooner. Had another appt. on Thursday and my OB said she doesn't imagine I will go into labor any time soon. Guess I'll just kick back and relax the best I can. The one thing I've learned is there is not consistency in twin pregnancies!
  • I've heard a lot about the 39w push but am surprised with twins that he's comfortable letting you go to 40 rather than 39. I had a scheduled induction at 37w6d. That was almost 5 years ago though and I know the pendulum tends to swing in different directions. At the time most drs wouldn't let you go past 38w with twins because supposedly with twins the placentas started to deteriorate after that point.

  • Oh no....no no no no.....I'm 36 wks this week and I am going to cry if they tell me they won't do this soon. I'm on procardia for ptl but in the meantime have dev severe swelling and high Bp if I didnt take the procardia....which leaves me in a situation where labor may never happen on its own. I'm with ya sister....it becomes so uncomfortable after 32 wks it's almost like torture. My talk/apt is tomorrow I'm praying he'll schedule a csection for next week!
  • So glad I saw this post! I'm 36 weeks and am completely miserable as well. The last few weekly doc visits have consisted of my doc coming in with an annoying smile on her face, me telling her I'm in misery, and then her telling me to "enjoy this and go home to take advantage of this period of nesting". Wtf! How can someone enjoy feeling like a whale, spitting up acid at night, not sleeping, and unable to even go up and down their own stairs during the day because it sets off painful BH?! Argh! Anyway, she's making me wait until 38. I'm tempted to try to rush labor myself (sex and spicy foods!), but I know that I need to just let nature do its thing.
  • It's sad to say, but in this circumstance, misery LOVES company lol. I sadly feel better knowing I'm not alone. Had another appt. with OB this morning and we're all praying babies come sooner than later. Baby A is so low she had a hard time finding his head in the u/s. Meanwhile, walking and moving it getting more and more tough. I'll be 34 weeks on Friday, then me and DH are gonna start getting it on lol! OB said babies can come anytime now and should be fine. At 36 weeks, I plan to really try to rush labor. I am not a happy momma!

Is that based on multiples, though? I thought I'd heard multiples develop a bit faster.

  • I'm 34w3d... I won't make it to 39. I am MISERABLE!!!!

I'm also 3cm dilated having upwards of 10 contractions a day, Baby A is breech and am literally waiting to go into labour at any moment.
