Re: Car seat- infant or convertible?

  • We are still in the infant seat but we just went today and looked at some convertible seats. No idea yet which we will get, there are so many options out there! We will be switching soon mainly because it's getting too heavy to carry him around in an infant car seat.

  • Switched at 4 months. The baby hated the infant car seat. Britax pavilion.

  • Ordered my new one on Friday.

  • Still in the infant seat, but my husband got the Recaro convertible seat. I'm looking for one for my car and everytime I look at them in the store all I can think is how the Recaro is like luxury compared to everything else.

So I'll probably be getting another one from Amazon for my car!

  • My LO prefers the convertible. She is much happier in car rides and I'm so glad we switched. We have a evenflo sureride.
  • We are still in the infant seat, and I foresee using it at least until a year, maybe longer. Our infant seat has high weight and height limits, probably the highest on the market, and I figure that our in-laws spent good money on it as a shower gift, so we should milk it for all it's worth. When LO gets too big to carry in the infant seat, we will just pick him up and carry him and leave the seat in the car.
  • We are still using the Chicco Keyfit for DS2. I just purchased his convertible set last night since I found a great deal. We'll probably move his around April unless he outgrows his infant seat sooner. At least for the winter it is easier for DH to do daycare pickup when he can just snap the baby into the base and the buckle DS1 in his seat. I'm excited for the Nextfit to arrive as it was a bit of a splurge but if DS2 follows his older brother's growth pattern, he should be able to RF until almost 4 in the Nextfit. DS1 RF until 3.5 when we had to replace his seat (CA65) due to an accident.

You know what? Black Friday / Cyber Monday might be a good time to putchase our convertible seat - I'll be checking online prices...

This! Although we probably won't use it for a couple more months.
  • Come to think of it, I got DS1's convertible seat on diapers.com on Black Friday and saved about $50.
  • We are still in the infant seat and will be till he outgrows it. Our seat has a high height and weight limit. When it gets too heavy to carry we will leave the seat in the car. DS1 was in the infant seat until he was 14 months. DS2 will transition before that as he is much bigger than DS1 was.

  • Still using the infant carseat, but we are buying a convertible one next month. Our infant carseat is quite small and DD is getting too big for it. Plus it's a pain to lug it around.

How do you like it?? My husband is hell bent on a Recaro because he is a big car guy and "they make racing seats so it must be good". LOL!

Switched over a month ago. We have the Chicco Nextfit. It is very nice, he fits in it nicely and it fits in my Subaru Forester well too. I chose it based on the many recline options, and the nicer buckles and fabric. It had great reviews too.

I've read great reviews too! I have the keyfit and thought this would be a great transition. What do you think so far? It seemed bulky, but reviews said it is actually on the slimmer side. Also, it seems to still have a bucket seat vibe when I saw it. Do you find that to be the case? That is what my LO is starting to get annoyed with in her infant seat.
  • Hoping to switch next month. She's getting so big and carrying the bucket seat up a down a three floors is getting really old. She can sit in the big girl part of her stroller now and for the most part sits in the top part of shopping carts. If I get a padded cover she probably will sit better so there's really no need for the bucket anymore.

  • We'll wait until winter is over to switch, it's easier to get her to and from the car all covered in blankets in the infant seat.

  • We switched a couple weeks ago to the Radian RXT. LO is 99th for height, and we wanted to be able to keep him rear-facing for as long as possible. Plus, I found it on sale!

  • Chicco Nextfit for a few weeks now. He has cried A LOT less, although he just doesn't care for being restrained for the most part. It's been less convenient when running errands because we have to do the whole cart cover with blankets shoved around him since he's not fully sitting up on his own yet. However, he's a big boy (100th percentile) so it's nice for him to have more room and not to add on the extra 15 lbs of the infant seat in addition to his 21 lbs! image
  • Infant car seat and I'm hoping to keep him in it until he's one. We got the graco click connect 40 so it adjusts in incline to be more upright and works until 40lbs. We only carry him in it from the apt to the car and back everywhere else we go we take him out and baby wear or stroller

  • @luckaloo - it's awesome! And that's why my husband first found it, plus it had great crash ratings. Seriously it makes any seat in the store feel cheap.

    He is WAY too cute!

What a cutie! Good to know! Thank you! He was sold on the crash ratings too.

Infant seat until sometime next year when we can do the great trade-in thing at BRU. We'll trade in the infant seat, get a new seat for DD1, and move DD2 to the convertible that we currently have. Thinking March/April-ish.

  • He's still in the infant seat but damn it's getting hard to carry.  But, like @CTGirl30 said, it's easier when you have another kid to keep tabs on so I'm holding out as long as I can.  We actually already have our convertible, a Graco Size4Me.

I think someone else mentioned this but if anyone is unsure of a good seat for your size kid, their car and budget, check out Car Seats for the Littles on FB.  There's a list of recommended seats and if the one you love isn't on there, they'll happily give their reasoning for it not being on there.  I say only because Recaro and Britax are both missing from the lists and the reason for both is that they have shorter shells so won't last taller than average kids as long as other seats.  But, all the seats on the market pass the same safety tests so any one you choose will be safe.  It just depends on if you hope to ERF and if there are certain features you love/hate.

  • I'm hoping to make it through the winter with the infant seat, but dang is that thing heavy!! As long as M stays happy and content in it we'll keep her in it. Some days I just leave it in the car and carry her back and forth, but if it's really cold or she falls asleep it's nice to have the option to click it in and out.

  • LO is in the convertible now but having two I definately wish I would have waited. However, I was not a huge fan of our infant car seat and LO seems so much more secure and comfortable in the convertible. It just sucks for some things like trying to go out to eat. LO is not siting 100% yet and can't do the high chair so without the infant seat it can get tricky

But, he is in a britax boulevard and I absolutely love it. I would recommend it for sure, I would just recommend waiting longer if you can

  • We are thinking about switching over soon because she hates the bucket. She's always trying to lean over and look out. As you can imagine, this is difficult for her since she's strapped in, so then she gets cranky. We are probably going with the Recaro based on recommendations from family members.
  • Infant seat.  She just became 15 pounds and she does so well in it.  I think that I will try to keep her in it as long as I can.  Popping her in and out and into her stroller is just so convenient for me right now.
  • I put switched but we never had her in an infant seat- we have the Graco MyRide65, and she's been in it since birth.

A friend just recommended this seat to me and it was the first I had heard of it. Anyone know anything about it? @elmoali?
It's a short lived seat because it only rear faces to 35 pounds or 22.5" in seated height.  For less money you can get a Graco Size4Me/MySize/Headwise that rear faces to 40 pounds and to within 1" of the fully extended 28" head rest.
