1st Trimester

Low Progesterone

So I am almost 7 weeks and I got a call from my Ob today to tell me that progesterone was low. They want it to be about 15 but mine was a 12-point-something, so I am going to have to take supplements to get that number up. I've heard that these supplements are not fun. Has anyone else had to take them?
Of course, a whole new wave of worry has just hit me....

Re: Low Progesterone

  • i was on them from weeks 5-11 and they just made me feel more crampy which i guess is a side effect!!  But i am 12 weeks now and have a healthy little peanut growing!!  Hopefully you won't have any bad side effects but after 2 miscarriages taking the progesterone was well worth it!!!

  • I had a high number at first. My progesterone was at 28 at 5weeks and then a week later it dropped down to 10 and so they put me on supplements and the only side effect I have is being really really sleepy at night after I take them. But I welcome that side effect because before i was taking them I couldnt sleep at all. I was exhausted but couldnt fall aseep to save my life. And if the progesterone is what I have to take to keep this baby growing then BRING IT ON!! I wouldnt care what side effects I had I would take it anyway! We have tried for 6 years!!! And this is my first pregnancy so I think at this point I would crawl across broken glass to keep this baby cooking!! Hugs!

  • I was at a 3 for my first pregnancy and took the supplements throughout my first trimester. They were easy to swallow and I don't remember any side effects. I didn't experience morning sickness like I am now with my second pregnancy. What do you mean they're not fun to take? What have you heard? I'm happy to give more details on my experience. I remember how scary that call was, but it's important and it's great you have a doctor who followed up on this. Not all do.

Once your placenta comes in, you should be able to come off the supplements. I went on to have a healthy pregnancy and baby.

  • Oh I wonder if you have heard that some people have to take them Vaginally? As a suppository? I've heard that a lot in the past. But I take mine orally and they are a gel cap. They are Really small. Is that what you mean about them not being fun Tribany1?

  • My doctor said they can do progesterone shots, which they recommend over suppositories for obvious reasons. Maybe check into that option? :)

  • I am on the suppositories.  They're not as bad as you would think.  My doctor said the suppositories are more effective than oral supplements, so I went with it.  I had a bit of cramping when I first started taking them, but that could have just been normal pregnancy stretching.  The only side effect I have now at 9 weeks, is extra discharge.  I put on a pad before I use it at night, and then I'm fine during the day.
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • Personal advice from a lot of personal experience with progesterone issues: use the suppositories rather than the oral pills. They deliver the hormone right to where it is needed. A little messy, but I love them -- they gave me two healthy children whom I would never have had otherwise.

I got mine compounded from real human progesterone at a medical pharmacy, that then shipped to me overnight for next to nothing. Glen Rock Medical Pharmacy in NJ. Love them. Good quality, real progesterone, low prices. Awesome.

One caveat -- your blood level will never show as high as what's actually in your uterus because the suppositories don't go into your bloodstream like the pills do. But the stuff is working.

Also, your level at 12 is actually acceptable. They like to see 10 to 12 at minimum. Mine was a 4 without the suppositories. :) So the baby should be OK as of now, but obviously you don't want that number to continue going down.

  • I put my self on progesterone. It's natural progesterone called Progest. My doctors would not even test me with my last 2 miscarriages eve when I was bleeding. I did my research and did what I needed to do. No side effects. Baby is still cooking:) see my new doctor on Tuesday!
  • Sorry I'm so late on reply (crashed computer.....uggggh). I've heard of those suppositories, but I've also heard the pills make you bloated, crampy, tired, constipated, etc. Of course I am taking them, and it is well worth it. I would never considered not taking them. I'm just worried about my little peanut!

  • I'm on injectible progesterone in oil (PIO) and Crinone.  (I am pretty much a walking medicine cabinet.)  PIO is very effective and measurable but requires your DH to shoot you up daily in the hip/butt with a large (1.5") needle.  I think that's why you usually only see it used for us IVF ladies who are used to needles.  ;-)  Crinone is a gel you shoot up your vag with an applicator.  It's super-easy to use but looks like ricotta cheese as your vag cleans itself out.  (Or as you clean yourself out with a finger,  which is sometimes necessary.)

Now aren't you glad you learned all of that today?   ;)
