Re: Urgent Question!!

  • I'm having pgd but that is happening after fertilization before transfer
  • I thnk they can look at the egg and the different parts of it, like the thickness of the outer shell, how much mass is within certain areas, etc. But I don't think this is widely done, or at least not in my experience. I don't know the research behind it and if any of these things really correlate with egg quality.

9/15/14 - Our first son born thanks to donor eggs at RBA after 7 failed own egg IVF cycles.

  • I would expect they can do some assessment as PP said; considering there are frozen egg banks now and one would hope there is some criteria for quality prior to freezing them and then charging $1,333 a pop, requiring your purchase a batch of 6. :) I'd ask your RE.

Even when they look at the eggs, very few abnormalities actually effect fertilization rate. The only one that will stop fertilization from occurring are SER aggregates.

Thats what I thought I had heard. But another thing to note is that just because they fertilize doesn't mean they are good quality. I have always had close to 100% fertilization but still poor egg quality as after fertilization they tended to arrest between days 2 and 3.

  • When we cycled at CCRM with my OE, my RE there told me that my eggs looked kind of grainy (or some other word that meant they looked weird - can't quite remember) with thick outer coatings.  So it wasn't a quantitative analysis or anything, but she did say that was probably indicative of their poor quality.
