Emily DD Emma

When I was 16 my cousin Emily named her daughter Emma. Everyone in my family commented on how that was a little bit weird. We moved on though and when I was 18 a friend in high school named Emily had a daughter and named her Emma! Today I met a woman at a baby shower named Emily and her daughter...Madelyn. But she is pregnant and mentioned that they were pretty set on Emma for a girl and Logan for a boy. Am I the only one that finds this weird? I only know four women named Emily and three of them have or will use Emma, the fourth doesn't have kids yet. I'll be watching her though! Do you know any Emily's with DD Emma? Or similar pairs?

I find it weird. I know sisters named Emily and Emma which I find even stranger.

ETA: I don't care for jrs but I'm fine with passing names down in the mn spot. My name is the feminized version of my dads name, Daniel/Danielle, and I never cared for it.

  • I don't think it's weird at all. Nothing wrong with passing along your name to your child in some form or another.

  • I also know an Emily who has an Emma. And yes, I find it odd. All the names out there and you pick what basically amounts to your own name.

  • Emma is extremely popular, so while I find it strange that they sound so similar, I don't find it strange they chose Emma. If that makes sense. If the name they chose was very unique, it might be more strange to me.

  • I'm an Emily and I'd never use Emma. Just weird to me and I come from a heritage where it's acceptable to name your daughter after her mom. My great grandmother was Anna. Her first daughter was Anna. My grandma was second and she was Johanna. G'G wasn't very original. My mom is the Americanized version of gram's name and is Jo-Ann. Most of my mom 's siblings named their kids after mom and/or dad. I don't mind doing it in the MN spot but it was soooo annoying having so many people with the same names at family get togethers.
  • I was friends with a girl in high school and her name was Marisa.  Her mother's name, Marissa.  She was named after her mother obviously but her mother left off an 's' so they weren't spelled the same.
  • My high-school English teacher and her husband named their two kids (one boy, one girl) after themselves. The kids went by their first and middle names and the parents just went by first names. I always found it a bit weird.

This. Emma is one of the most popular names in the U.S. so I feel like it probably has nothing to do with the moms' names being Emily.

  • Someone I know named their DD Cl.ara Ann. Mom's name is Sar.ah Ann. Now that is weird.
  • Very weird. Looking at the title I prayed you weren't asking "are these too similar" because i was going to answer HELL YES lol

Having said that Emma/Emily is sooo popular these days so I understand why they like the name in general.

  • I know what you are saying but it's not uncommon.   It's common for people either have their parent's name or a similar name, like in this case. It's not my style for a first name, but I'd do it for a middle name for sure.

  • I don't understand the comments about passing down the name. Emily and Emma are different names, how is it passing down?

(Same with the post yesterday about mom Carolyn giving DD Caroline as mn... People kept replying that it wasn't weird bc there's nothing wrong with naming your daughter after you. But... It isn't naming your daughter after you. They are different, albeit similar, names.)

I think it's slightly weird. Not a big deal, but gives me a few moments of pause.

Agree. My mom and I have the same mn. Not weird. Is it because the first names also rhyme??
