breast pump issues

So I have tried pumping a couple of times and normally it only drips out and I can get about 1 oz to maybe an oz an a half on each breast Well my LO is spending the night with my mom tonight and I want to pump so he has some breast milk and not just formula. Any suggestions on getting more out with the pump? I have a medela pump. When he is on breast he seems to get enough so I know I'm producing.

Re: breast pump issues

  • Pump one breast while he nurses from the other.

  • Maybe your flange is the wrong size. I'm having the same problem and determined mine was too big. This page has a nice graphic: https://www.ameda.com/breast-pumping/getting-started/flange-fit

  • It is NORMAL to only get half an ounce to 2 ounces total per day if you are nursing full time!

  • It's been said here more than once, but it's worth repeating. It's important to try to relax while you pump. I know it's not relaxing to have a motor hooked up to your teet, but do your best. I try to sit back on the bed and put on crappy TV and zone out while I pump. I don't look at the output until the end either. It's like Christmas every time

  • That's about all the more I get pumping after a feeding, I just started this week. I am getting more and more every day. Seems pretty normal to me, I don't expect that I have just ounces and ounces of BM left in my boobs after my kid is done eating.

Do you feel a let down? I never got a let down when I pumped with DS. I like @kirbabe 's suggestion.

This would be my first suggestion for anyone who has trouble pumping. The flange should be able to really draw in your nipple. I EP and once or twice have accidentally grabbed the wrong flange and as soon as I realize and switch to the right one my milk output changes immediately

Where can you get a different size flange? Looks like I may have to wrong size. I usually pump very early morning, feed LO in one side and pump the other, get between 3-5 ounces. But apparently it maybe the wrong size! Thank you ladies.
  • Hmm, my pump came with a bunch of different sized flanges. I will say that the first few times I used the smaller, correct sized flange, it was a little uncomfortable when I would start the suction, but after a few seconds would be ok. If you don't have size options maybe try amazon??

  • Mine didn't come with any other options, will try amazon. Good thinking just have to figure out what size # I need. All this time I never knew.
