Honey & babies

So, I know NO honey until baby is 1, even baked into things. But the website I was looking at says commercial products are usually ok because they're heated at a higher temperature.

If I bought challah at a bakery, does that count as commercial? Do you think their ovens are actually hotter than mine at home?

I was going to make some for Thanksgivikkah, but if 8 month old could nom on some from a bakery, I'll save myself the trouble of making at home.

Re: Honey & babies

  • Ok, you've convinced me. Baby will just have to wait another year for the deliciousness. Now just to decide whether or not to be lazy... bakery or homemade... :)

  • We followed the -no honey until a year- rule. But at DD's 1 year appointment the pedi kind of laughed at that and said that store bought honey was fine and it was only raw honey that you had to avoid. I had never heard that before. I'm not sure I will give our next kid honey before a year, but I probably wouldn't worry about store bought honey that has also been cooked in a meal at home.

  • Pasteurized honey is okay. Is the internal temp of whatever you're baking going to be 161 degrees?
  • I have no idea what the internal temp would be. I'm baking bread at 375° for 30-40 minutes. Would that do it?

If it's at all risky, I just won't give it to him. He's only 8 months, sill nurses a lot. But he loves all the food, so I've been trying to give him most things I eat that don't have lots of sugar or salt.
  • No cooked honey?! GDI there are so many rules.

Yea, I'm not really one to follow most of the food rules, but I've heard honey is serious.
