My happy, almost never fussy 6 mo. old guy seems to have disappeared over the past few days.
He started sleeping bad about a month ago and now he is up every hour at night. We are lucky if he sleeps a solid two hour stretch. On top of that he is only getting around 9 hours of sleep overnight and is fighting naps like crazy. When he does take a nap, he starts displaying sleepy signs within 30 min of being up.
Over the last handful of days he will only nurse for 2-3 minutes, I am lucky if I can get 5 minutes. When I try to put him back on the breast he unlatches at 2 minutes and just screams at me.
He is so tired and so unhappy and I don't know what to do. I am terrified of weight loss as he is only 9th percentile. I don't want our breastfeeding to end (I had to EP for first 4 months) but I am exhausted fighting with him and only getting sleep in 30 min increments.
What about reflux? Have you taken him to the pedi's lately and talked to them about this? Is he spitting up a lot? Even if he's not, he could have what's called silent reflux. My son had that. We ended up having to put him on zantac and elevate the head of his crib to keep him on an incline to help. I bring up reflux because you mention him screaming while eating. It's a classic sign. Can you try giving him a bottle and feeding him as upright as possible? I'm not an experienced breastfeeding, but maybe you can adjust your positioning so he can sit up more? Then keeping him upright or at least a 30% incline for 30 minutes or so after eating. Laying flat is bad for a baby with reflux, it's painful for them. However, I'd definitely take him to the pedi and have them check him out for it. For silent reflux, his throat will be raw because not only does the acid come up, but because he doesn't spit up, the acid goes down again, so twice the burn Have you tried letting him sleep in the rock n play or some other chair that's inclined?
Good luck, I know this stuff is exhausting!
TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!
Thank you for your suggestion. He saw pedi a week ago for 6 month visit and got a clean bill of health. We weren't having the feeding issues yet, so I'm gonna call tomorrow. I'm not convinced there isn't a health issue.
He does spit up what seems to be a lot, always has. Can reflux develop this late? He used to sleep in rnp, but more he scoots out of it. We will try bottle and rno when we can watch him sleep tomorrow.
Have you checked your wonder week? I know there is a weird several week period that nearly all babies go through that's really rough... week 29 (?) I think. My excellent sleeper was waking up 6-8 times a night!
I'm in the sane boat and idk what to do about it I feed her and put her down she naps and wakes up again!! What's wonder week? And how do I know if we are going though that?
Here's a link:https://www.thewonderweeks.com
The wonder weeks are about when a baby's brain is developing and when they'll go through tough times. There's a book and a free app. The home page of The Bump can tell you what week you're in in the upper right corner (assuming you have the birthday in your profile).
