No Dairy?

So, after about a month of issues with LO nursing, I think her biggest issue isn't thrush, I think it's gas.  And I'm fairly sure it's something I'm eating that is causing her gas.  I really didn't think it could be a dairy issue, since I really don't eat much dairy, but I'm going to start by giving up dairy products and seeing if that helps her issues.

Have any of you had to give up dairy?  Was it harder or easier than you thought?  How long did it take for you to notice a difference in LO?

Re: No Dairy?

  • I had to give up dairy. It was hard for me, I drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese and creams. A little dairy as an ingredient in food usually is ok if I don't eat too much of the food. I slowly saw a difference but after 2 weeks the painful gas episodes he would get were completely gone.

We actually just found out LO has thrush, but think he's had it for awhile (bad ped experience made it go undisguised longer) I know if yeast gets bad and into the guy in can cause gas issues for LO. How did you guys get treating and how long did it take to treat?

  • @Ashesha13 Well our thrush case is weird because I never had any pain or anything, just some pink nipples.  And LO only had a white tongue, but not white enough to be an obvious case of thrush.  When she started having nursing issues (pulling off often, screaming during nursing, not gaining weight), the lactation consultant looked at her tongue and said it was thrush and that was the reason she was screaming, because it hurt for her to nurse.  So I took Diflucan (2 pills was all it took) and LO has been on Nystatin for almost 3 weeks.  Her tongue is still white and while nursing has gotten a bit better, she still has days where it's almost impossible to feed her because she pulls off and screams and I can't get her to settle down.

My mom works with a woman who went through almost the same symptoms (besides the white tongue) and she said she figured out it was a gas issue.  She suggested that I burp LO every few minutes while nursing, and make sure to pull her legs up often to help her pass gas and use gas drops.  Things have gotten a bit better.  I'm going to finish this bottle of Nystatin and continue to sanitize everything like I have been, but I'm going to cut out dairy and see if that does anything to help the issues go away completely.  If not, we go to the doctor in 2 weeks and hopefully he can give me an idea of what to do.

  • @theusualmischief I am sure I eat a lot of hidden dairy - I couldn't have my waffles this morning. :(

  • @kwrecks

That's pretty much how it's been for us except I've had minor pain or discomfort in my nipples/breast LO had white tongue ped said no not thrush ER said definitely thrush. Nystatin was prescribed for both of us and the cream has actually been making my discomfort worse( which I've read it can get worse before better). LO is starting to nurse better some days no bottle needed some still 2-3 because it seems to be less uncomfortable for him. I also bought some gentian violet just in case the nystatin doesn't work since I've heard very mixed reviews. How are you sanatizing things? That's my biggest concern I feel like everything is infected and will reinfect.

  • I gave up dairy when LO was having really bad gas. I just started introducing it back into my diet and LO seems to be able to handle it better. He still toots a lot but it doesn't bother him any more. For us it was melted cheese more than any other dairy that bothered him.
  • @Ashesha13 I was just boiling things, but I got some microwave steam sanitizer bags and have been using those.  I change out her pacifier 3-4 times a day, and make sure to steam sanitize them before she gets them again.  I also put her bottle nipples, and pump parts in the steam bags after every use.

  • Oh good to know. Thank you. Is there a way to steam sanitize without the bags or should u just boil pacifiers for now

  • LO had mucusy poops and bad gas. I started by cutting out obvious forms of dairy, I never really ate much anyways. It was easier than I thought, I miss cheese the most. LO seems to be fine with "hidden" dairy, but when I started introducing cheese again the mucus came back. It's not as bad as you think.

  • When we were first trying to find an explanation for why one of the babies was a screamy screamer, I cut ALL dairy, even hidden dairy. That was hard. We went to the pedi a week later and she said reflux and not a dairy allergy, so I went back to eating dairy.

The hidden dairy was by far the hardest, so if you don't have to cut that out, it's relatively easy and straightforward. I can't handle milk/cream myself but am fine w cheese and yogurt.

  • I have a reflux baby and was told to try going dairy free. I did it twice (and cut out hidden dairy too, like casein and whey). I didn't notice any changes either time. However, it does seem to improve symptoms for other babies and it never hurts to try.

  • I had to cut out all dairy and also soy. Soy was harder because there was a lot of things I had used that had soy. i didn't realize about the hidden dairy. Cheese was the hardest and finding a milk I liked as well. Choc was hard too, because of Halloween. It took about a month for the dairy to fully leave my body. Let me know if u have any questions.
