TTC after 35

Anyone past ummmm age 40 and TTC?

I know this board is full of really great women past 35, but I'm just curious how many of us on this board are into their 40's and TTC?  Sometimes I feel like there aren't too many of us and I think it would be cool to have a little special check-in for us.

So, I'll raise my hand as the first poster....I'm 43 and will turn 44 in less than 6 months.  We're TTC our first and hopefully will find success soon. It's been a long 4 years of trying, but I'll always remain hopeful that success is right around the corner.

Anyone else want to chime in???

Re: Anyone past ummmm age 40 and TTC?

  • Hi! I'm an oldie, too! I'm 42, DH is 35. We're still working on our first. It is crazy how much difference it seems to make, reproductively speaking, when your age begins with a 4... or even a 5(!). I'm really losing hope (for myself- don't let my negativity affect you!). We actually gave up trying after 4 failed IVFs. Then I found, after several months, that I just wasn't okay with letting go. I was not healing, not moving forward. So, I thought, maybe I didn't try hard enough. We're giving it one last effort, throwing the kitchen sink, so to speak, at my IF. If this one fails, I really don't know what will happen. We honestly talk about moving far away, where no one knows us. And we may just do it! :)

  • 42 here. Had my son at 40. Got pregnant again this past August, but lost the baby (looked to be a blighted ovum). We've recently been dealing with some tough stuff with my son, which has caused me to have the "Just because I CAN, does it mean I SHOULD?" conversation with myself, which is never an easy conversation to have. Part of me is terrified at the thought of having another kid with challenges. And I'm in crap shape right now to boot. So, I'm being passive-aggressive and NTNP. I feel most at peace with leaving all of this up to the higher powers right now. But it makes me sad to think I won't have another baby. I'd love for my son to have a sibling, especially now.

  • I'm 40 and TTC for my second, but my first with my current husband.  I had my daughter when I was 21 with my ex-husband, she's 19 now and off to college, so the age gap seems stupidly big but we really want a child together, I really want my husband to get to experience being a father.  We got a BFP last December but lost it in January (ectopic, lost my right tube to the surgery).  I've since been through testing and nothing seems wrong, but still no luck in the 10 months since our loss.

  • Hi!
    I'm 40, turning 41 in a few weeks.
Me and SO have decided to TTC #1 for both of us. I am super excited, but doing everything I can in my body and mind to make it happen in 2014:

I am on a fertility diet
    I am losing extra fat
I cut way down on caffeine
I am meditating with fertility-centered visualizations and mantras
    I am taking prenatal vitamins
I am charting (not temping yet) with FF

Some of this stuff sounds so crazy, but I want to have a baby with this man more than anything :-)
Good luck to all of us!

  • I turned 41 two months ago. We had our DS1 at 38 and were pg again in 2012 but lost our DS2 at 18w due to a cord accident. We have done 4 iuis/injects since our loss with no success. We decided to go the DE/DS route and had our first transfer this morning! Hoping & praying for this to work!!! Wishing everyone the best!
  • I turned 43 a month ago and feeling optimistic. I had my first IVF in February but got a BFN. We transferred 5 eggs and thought one would come through. In May I got pregnant on my own but miscarriaged after 8 weeks. Now I'm currently going through an iui cycle. I will be during the insemination in a few days. I know there's a little one in all our sights sooner than later. Keep hope alive because dreams do come true even after 40.
  • Thank you so much for this thread. Hi. I am 42 (will be 43 in May) and I have been lurking for a bit but very intimidated by the threads and hesitant to speak. Mostly because of my age. However, I've been hungry for fellow over 40 moms-to-be and I hope to give and find support among you. This is my first attempt at TTC being that when i was married my ex decided he didnt want children when the agreed time for family planning came about. Then in Dec 2010 I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids and told no to IVF due to their presence and high risk of miscarriage. . According to four doctors i was advised that I stood a greater chance of ending with a hysterectomy than a successful surgery preserving my uterus. I freaked out, got angry with the universe, and drowned my sorrows by taking an extended self-discovery and self empowerment trip around Europe. In August of this year I finally had the fibroids removed after finding a specialist whose caring manner and research into my situation said more than just scooping out the goods was my only solution. With the support of my boyfriend (43) and close friends, I experienced a fast recovery full of love and positive energy towards my desire for family. My fibroids were a total of 6 lbs (one intramural, one pedunculated) and had my uterus expanded to the equivalent of a 20wk pregnancy. They were removed by myomectomy (c-section like). This coming Tuesday marks exactly 3 mos since surgery and I go in for an HSG test to ensure nothing is blocked. I have had regular periods and feel positive. I just started my first cycle of BBT charting and finally learning all the stuff that women my age I suppose have figured out so many moons ago. :-) Talk about being a late bloom. Regardless, this is where I am. I have kept my sights on the Susan Sarandons and Halle Berrys of the world and now Im thankful for you and your story and shared journey. I look forward to coming to know all of you. @Momona: I am trying acupuncture as well to assist the chances. :-)

Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. • Thank you for starting this thread.  I'm 42.  I am always looking for over-40 gals to chat with as others seem to not really 'get it'.  I have a friend at work who is going through infertility struggles, but she's like 32 and I feel like she has sooo much time and is so lucky in that regard.  Not to minimize anyone else's problems, but when you're 'our' age it feels so much more dire.  Or it does to me.

We've been trying since we got married at the beginning of 2011.  I've been pregnant 5 times (1x on my own, 1 IUI and the rest IVF's), but they've all ended in loss. My situation is somewhat unusual in that I struggle with being written off as miscarriages chocked up to old age/old eggs but the losses don't all fit the box they want to put me in.  I respond very well to stims, but each of my losses were characterized differently.  Some were early, one was after we saw the heartbeat and likely due to autoimmune issues. Another was suspected ectopic.  All this and I am still holding on to hope + trying the 'kitchen sink' approach this cycle.

I am literally as we speak waiting to hear my transfer time for IVF tomorrow so I'm walking on eggshells (pun intended).  Our insurance kicked us out on this one, so it's all out of pocket, which makes it all the more stressful.

Sending good vibes to all of us!!

  • Thank you all for such great responses!!!  I knew I wasn't alone, but having so many chime in is really great. Sounds like we all have been through a lot and can really learn from and be here to support each other. So, please don't be shy about posting here with info on the progress of your jouney.

@HeathernSteven - The whole $$ aspect of IF totally sucks. It jus shouldn't be this way. GL to you on your natural cycles, I really hope you find successs.

@Momona1 - Sounds like you are doing all the right stuff. FX for you!!!

@lmielocl1 - I'm so sorry for your loss. Much success to you on your recent transfer, though.

@str82it - Love all your positivity!! GL!!

@ArtsyMe - Wow, what a journey you have travelled. Sounds like you are seeing some light at the end, though and that's great. Please don't be intimidated to speak on this board. We are a great group on here and would love to get to know you. The support you can receive is amazing.

@DawnHope - So sorry about your recurrent losses. That is so difficult to deal with pysically and emotionally. I also totally get what you mean about knowing women in their 20's and 30's that are having IF issues. I don't minimize it either, but to me they seem to have all the time in the world to get it figured out, where we just don't. Wishing you all the best on your transfer which I believe is today!

  • Thanks for this thread. I am 42, been trying over 2 1/2 years. Had my first pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage due to chromosomal abnormalities this past august. Never could have imagined how hard and painful this journey would be. Going to try pgd next time around. I will probably need 3 retrievals in order to get enough embryos to test. If that fails, the next step is using and egg donor .
  • LOVE your post! I haven't been on this site in months but saw this post and had to reply immedistely.

My DS is now 18 months & was born 3 months before I turned 42. I got pregnant after a few months of using the ovulation predictor pee sticks .

I turned 43 in August and we just truly started TTC for #2. I started using the ovulation pee sticks again today. We will not use any other medical methods.

I'm nervous about whether or not I'm actually ovulating because I'm still BF. I'll know the answer to that soon enough . My biggest fear is having a second child who has any challenges as the risks are so much higher now. Everyone I meet thinks that I'm 10 years younger than I am so I'm hoping my eggs are just as preserved ;-) Wishing you luck!

  • @MommaTracey GL to you on trying to have baby #2!!!

I definitely feel and look 10 years younger too :) Perhaps the eggs inside feel and act the same, lol.  First round didn't prove that way for me, but I'm very hopeful for round two.  Keep in touch, I love hearing all the journeys of us "older" gals.

  • I'm so happy to find this thread!!  I'm brand new here.  I'll be 41 on Sunday, and although we haven't been using BC since we got married (7/11), we just started trying in earnest a couple of months ago.

I've lost 35 pounds and have had all sorts of blood tests and just had an HSG yesterday.  One of my tubes may be blocked, but I'm waiting to hear from the doctor.  My numbers from the blood tests looked mostly good - my next appt is with an RE.  I anticipate Clomid or similar based on what the gyno told me.  H hasn't been able to get an appt for a semen analysis until January.

I'd love to stick around here for support - I'm afraid to talk to anyone in my family about this.  My sister is my absolute best friend, but she'd be so out of her mind happy if she knew we were trying - she would constantly be asking me questions and it would totally stress me out.

  • Hello everyone

I'm not quiet 40 yet.  Will be in less than a year, but I'm on my 3rd IVF.  My AMH is that of advanced maternal age.  It is .30.  Looking to this group for some positive stories.   During this last cycle I had one embryo make it to a 3 dt.  It was a 4 cell fair quality and hoping that it makes it.  I can't deal with this horrible rollercoaster.

@Samuelismomma - Sorry for your losses.  Wishing you the best of luck in getting preganat with #2. Hope your stay here is short.

@amyb140 - Welcom and Happy early Birthday!  Your RE may have a different protocol based on age than what your OB has suggessted.  My first IVF (we didn't do too many IUI's because we felt at this age it can be a waste of precious time) was a micro flare protocol.  I responded well and got pregnant, however m/c at 7 weeks.  I completely understand your decision to be private about all this.  We did as well for about 4 years, however I had to tell certain family recently because of an untimely circumstance.  I so wish the "cat wasn't out of the bag" as they say. I'm hoping they can respect our privacy now and not be too invading as we continue on our journey.  PM me if you ever need to talk with someone who understands and don't want to tell family. I'd be more than happy to lend a supportive ear.

vouts625 - Sorry for your struggles and dx.  This sure is one big rollercoaster ride we are all on.  I'm so ready to jump off it :)  I sometimes lurk/read the Pregnant over 35 board as it gives me the hope and positivity I need at times.  GL to you on your journey!

  • Would anyone be interested in starting an over 40 check-in? This was a great post and comforting for me at 43. I would like to stay in touch and hear about our over 40 progress.
  • Great idea @str82it! I'm up for being the one who starts it.

The regular check-in on this board is on Wed, so I'll start a weekly check-in for us over 40 gals tomorrow to ensure it is a different day from the regular one.

  • I hit the check in first, but after reading more stories, I thought I would share more? Here. I am 41, he is 48. I am TTC with no children, he has 3, youngest 17. He had a v reversal. We had a m/c in June at 17 weeks. I was so regular before pg. Now I am sooo not. OPK is my only option at the moment. I just moved and started a new job. My health care will take a few months to establish... I can barely get my thyroid taken care of, no one will consider getting me seen for specialty. DH isa bit of a procrastinator (like I have time for that) and just found out he never finished process for taking ex off paperwork, so Iit will be a while before I can be added to his benefits- I asked in September. I have a friend who went DE and she is an understanding resource, but shes back home. So its good to have 24/7 check in capabilities here :-) I know lots of over 40 moms, I'd love to loin their ranks ;-) here's hoping that we all get to do so, sooner than later!
