Confessions: occupying your LO

So this morning I let J play in her dirty laundry that was piled up post-vacation, ready for the wash. It occupied her for 20min.

I'm not sure I would confess this IRL. But since we are all friends here, what do you let your LO do to get a few minutes of time? Bonus points if it is something pre-kiddos you would have given the side-eye.

Truth be told, M has gotten pretty good lately at independent play. He's quite content playing with his toys.  Since DH doesn't get home until 6:30pm, I always have to cook dinner alone w/M so we can eat as soon as DH walks in through the door.  Some days M gets fussy right when I"m cooking, so I let him play with kitchen stuff like colander.

Things that I used to side-eye: this grocery store we go shop at usually have free samples of bread at their bakery counter.  M tends to get fussy half-way through our shopping trip, so I swing around the bakery counter to see what free stuff they have.  The other day it was double chocolate cookies!  M ate 1/2 of one and both hands and his whole face were smudged/smeared in chocolate!

Another thing, not sure I really would side-eye or not before I had LO... M is still at the cruising stage and he is obsessed with pushing things around so he can "walk."  So if we're out in public, I bring along his el cheapo umbrella stroller so he can push it to walk around.

  • When we're out to dinner and DS starts to get antsy I let him watch movies on my iPhone. Prior to having a kid anytime I saw kids at a dinner table watching movies I thought it was soo tacky. Now, ill do anything to keep him quiet and occupied so we can finish a meal.

  • DD1 loves watching videos on you tube. She's really into these Egg Surprise or Kinder Egg videos where someone opens the eggs and we see what the toy is inside. So weird, but it keeps her occupied.

  • The other day, DD was driving me nuts in the bathroom while I was trying to go, so I handed her the tissue box and let her pull them out one by one, then shove them all back in. It's "her" tissue box now and she can do it whenever she wants.

  • Not gonna lie, the other day when I was baking cookies, to keep Hannah content I gave her some. I had such lofty plans to hold off sweets until later.

Also I totally give Hannah french fries when we eat out in public. She loves them so much, just like her mama.

  • E loves to play with paper. So I give her our junk mail. She loves to sort it and pile it and rip it up.
I also let her eat way too much. It's our go to when she's fussy (because it works.) we try to keep it to healthy ish snacks, but sometimes it's chips or graham crackers.

  • LO is obsessed with Kung Fu Panda....he calls it "dooooooo" I think he is trying to say Fu. Anyways, its so terrible he gets tranced, most tv he just doesn't care. So anyways, if I need to get something done its a sure bet to keep him quiet for a bit.

  • Right now, my older 2 watch lots of TV.  I can't leave them alone for too long or things go terribly wrong, so they watch a show when I shower and get ready in the am, another after they have done 30-45 min of "quiet time" playing in the play room (not really quiet, but just a little break for me since they don't nap any longer), and another show while I make dinner.  They also are SO picky that they get their own dinner and DH and I eat after they go to bed.  I always said we would all eat the same dinner, etc, but they don't eat, so they get one of the 3 meals that they eat for dinner!

The baby just does whatever she wants for the most part!  She has her binkie far more than the other 2 did, and spends more time sleeping in our bed.  The worst was that DS and DD both had to go to the bathroom at a public restroom in a local play space.  We get in there, and both of them have to poop.  That means I have to help them both get up on to the toilet (at separate times of course), then wipe them.  Unfortunately I can't really do that while holding DD#2.  So I had to put her down and let her crawl around...YUCK!!!!!  The only good thing was that it was a private bathroom and the place had JUST opened, so it was clean.  But I did wash her hands excessively when we were leaving (along with the other 2's hands!).  She is going to have quite a good immune system...
