High-Risk Pregnancy

Type 2 diabetic and pregnant :)

I'm pregnant with my 3rd little miracle . I my other children are older and I didn't have diabetes whe I was pregnant with them . I was diagnosed with type 2 ... 2 years ago and my health is very good . Sugars are well controlled with metformin and diet .... I see my regular OB and a maternal fetal specialist ...,, my question is for other moms who are pregnant or had diabetes when you were pregnant .... What If any problems did diabetes cause you or your baby during pregnancy. ?

Re: Type 2 diabetic and pregnant :)

  • I'm not Type 2, but I'm on my third round of gestational diabetes. The GD hasn't caused any problems for me or my girls. My first two were completely healthy, on the small side (6lbs 11oz and 6lbs), never had an issue with their blood sugar. So far this little girl looks to be perfect and exactly at the 50th% for growth. I ended up on insulin with all three pregnancies, but have not had any issues aside from the blood sugar - no high blood pressure, etc.

  • I am a Type 1 just diagnosed with the last 3-4 years. I did not have any problems during my pregnancy at all. I was the healthiest I had ever been. My daughter was 7 lbs 3 oz and is not a diabetic. Once I got further along in my pregnancy (35 weeks), I saw the doctor frequently but that is the case with normal pregnancies as well. I never saw a high risk OB or an Endo during my pregnancy. I saw my same OB, regular doctor (every 3 months) and a diabetes educator once a month as well. When we decided to try for a baby I was pleasantly surprised that we got pregnant so quickly.

  • I'm also a Type 2, diagnosed just about 2 years ago while I was pregnant with DD. I was undiagnosed and they thought it could be GD, but it never went away after I delivered.

When I am not pregnant, I am easily diet controlled with Metformin. I started insulin pretty early in my pregnancy (I want to say around 12 weeks or so? I don't remember off the top of my head) this time around. With DD I was med controlled for a while, then moved on to insulin for the end. By the time I gave birth I was on some really high doses of insulin. You can probably expect to go on insulin during your pregnancy. My endo put me on insulin with the option of using a pump. I use the pump and I LOVE it! My A1C was 4.7 when I usually run in the high 5's when I'm not pregnant.

DD had no issues at all. I had an induction at 39 weeks (incredibly common. Doctors vary, but most will induce at 39 weeks especially if you're on insulin due to placenta deterioration risks) that was incredibly easy and smooth. DD was 7 lbs even and did amazing with everything, no signs of being a Diabetic yet, but we'll of course keep an eye on it.
