mom instinct vs paranoia

So, DS was born with brain damage and seems to be doing really well, his biggest issue at the moment is he has severe constipation.  We have him on medication (as per his pedi), which he had some issues with, so I happened to go onto WebMD (I know, I know) and it said one cause of constipation can be neurological issues.  I was talking to my Mom the other day and she was saying how my cousin's little girl (who was also born with brain damage) has really bad constipation (I didn't tell her about what I had seen on WebMD, she just happened to ask how he was doing and then said how the little girl was having similar issues).  He goes for his neuro-developmental check in about a month, but I'm wondering if I should bring this up to his pedi/call the neuro doc or am I just being a super paranoid mom?

Re: mom instinct vs paranoia

  • I agree, your not running to the ER. Bringing up a symptom with your doctor is the only way that you can work towards a solution and improve your child's condition.

  • I would definitely bring it up.What would it hurt? If it is a possible symptom, and could guide your pedi, I would absolutely do it. If it turns out to be NBD, great... but if it is, you will feel better that you caught it, right?
Thanks.....DH thinks I'm just being a paranoid worrywart, but I just feel like there must be some connection.

  • I see no reason not to bring it up.
  • there might be a connection, but might not be. It doesn't hurt to mention it. Colby had a lot of belly issues over the last year, probiotics really helped us. (I'm sure you have tried this, but I just figured I would mention what has worked for us). good luck!

  • You should always trust your mom gut. Bring it up. Don't try to bury it in the conversation either. When it is time to discuss concerns, say the constipation is really bothering me as I heard/was told/worry that it is a symptom.

Tell your DH it is not paranoia until you are jumping in the car and speeding to the ER for a scarped knee. ha.

  • DD has issues with constipation as well but the dr thinks it is because her body doesn't retain water properly.  They recently found out she has calcium build-up around her kidneys because of this.  I was using Miralax but since Miralax takes water from her body and we want her to retain as much as possible to avoid more calcium in her kidneys, I've started prunes and pears and that is working amazingly. Might be worth a shot..they've never tested her for brain damage so I hope there's no issue there..
