April 2014 Moms

Let the Thanksgiving festivities begin!

I know it's next week but we have a friend's thanksgiving tomorrow night and am getting excited to make my homemade cranberry sauce tonight and green bean casserole Tomorrow! I would love to hear some of your favorite traditions and foods/recipes! (Looking for a good sweet potato recipe)

Last year I made the same but fruit salad instead of sweet potatoes!

Re: Let the Thanksgiving festivities begin!

  • I love alllllll of it.  everything about thanksgiving.  We always get a couple of bushels of oysters and roast those on the grill in the morning, then have dinner later in the afternoon.  It's an awesome day, even though the kids are falling apart by the end of it.

    Green bean casserole:
I do 2 cans of green beans (you can use fresh uncut green beans about 9 oz. if you prefer that- I did that last year)
1 can of cream of celery soup
    3/4 c. of milk
    Salt and pepper
1 cup to as needed fried onions (I use french's fried onions)
    Preheat oven to 350

Mix soup, milk, beans, s&p, 2/3. C of fried onions into a medium casserole dish. (We have a huge family so I double the recipe and use a larger casserole dish almost a 9x13.)
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes
    Stir after baking
Top with remaining onions and than bake for 5 minutes before serving so onions are crispy!
  • Thanks so much! That sounds easier than I thought it'd be!

  • I love stuffing! Oh and my mothers sweet potato casserole- dear lord. It's basically a heart attack in a glass dish. I love it. I don't have the recipe but its basically mashed sweet potatoes, butter, brown sugar, butter, roasted pecans, butter. Oh wait.... Did I mention butter?

That sounds amazing, I think I'll do one that has pecans in it for Thursday sounds delicious!

My mom makes this too! I don't like sweet potatoes but you can't even taste them so I like it :)) it really is just sugar and butter for the most part... But warm and delicious!
  • I make the annual bacon wrapped green beans. So yummy!

    Bacon! That sounds tempting!
  • I love every single thing about thanksgiving! We always do a traditional menu (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes ect...) but I think I'm looking forward to my mom's home made Mac n cheese mixed with my aunts sweet potatoes omg!
  • We do turkey (I brine the night before and do a sage/thyme butter rub), stuffing, mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, gravy and chocolate chip pecan pie for dessert. Omg I'm so hungry right now.
  • Last night I spent an hour making my grocery list! I can't wait to start cooking on Tuesday! We hosted last year and I was hoping to make that a tradition, but since our living room is still all torn up from the flood, it will be at my ILs' house. Kinda bummed, but at least I don't have to fret over the turkey and rotate out all my sides while it cooks!

    I am making...

    Hatch Chile Mac & Cheese
    Squash Casserole
    Fresh Cranberry Sauce
    Pecan Pumpkin Butter Pie

I usually also make my grandmother's Cornbread Dressing but my MIL wants to make her dressing...which means it will be icky. I might make a half recipe just to keep at our house. She is a horrid cook. So glad we talked her into a pre-smoked turkey from Rudy's.

(List in process last night...it's 3 pages now!)

@MaglioMama I'm trying a new recipe this year for pumpkin pie so I can't vouch for it yet. However, it is from Williams-Sonoma and they rarely steer me wrong! It's easy and uses the pecan pumpkin butter they sell:

  • I'm so excited for Thanksgiving! I know I'll probably need a bottle of insulin to make it through the day, but I love me some mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and all of the other goodies awaiting me on that glorious holiday :)

Just making the Thanksgiving shopping list right now - it's a little intimidating!

My Nana's Sweet Potato Casserole is pretty darn wonderful (though very laced with Bourbon)

(see if this works - this is my Nana's original typed recipe that we've scanned into a digital recipe book. Very special to have these from her and other family members)

  • This is our year with DH's fam. We suggested doing it at our house (SIL lives an HR away has 4 kids and is preg with the 5th so I thought it might be easier for for her to come down and not have to worry about cooking and hosting) but she wants to go blackfriday (or is it black Thursday shopping now?) So just MIL is coming down until around 5:30.

We are getting a ham made for us ::ducks::
Then making stuffing, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. I am excited to be cooking with MIL and having her around. I love her :)

after MIL leaves DD and I will walk on over to my mom's to eat over there. I have reminded her several times a day that we will be over and to make sure to have enough and save me crab dip.I love being able to enjoy my moms home cooking ever year!

This year will be da bomb (yep just said it)
