Great Grandma/Grandma gift

Earlier this Fall my grandma was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and subsequently fractured her bone where the tumor was. She's in a nursing home and we never see her getting out. To be honest we aren't even sure she'll make it to Christmas. I'm trying to think of something that DH, myself and DS can get her for Christmas that she'll benefit from and love. Does anyone have ideas? She's 86 and is usually dressed to the nines, hair, makeup, nails, the works. She has plenty of clothes and such. TIA!

Re: Great Grandma/Grandma gift

  • we always brought my great grandmother flowers when we visited the nursing home. Not sure if that is appropriate or not but she loved having something fresh and beautiful that took away from the smell of the place.

Does the nursing home have a 'salon' that they do her hair and nails for her or is she still doing it herself? would she like some nail or hair care stuff?
I hope that you are able to enjoy the holidays with her!

  • Thanks ladies! I was thinking something from Bennett but wasn't fully sure. She gets exhausted very easily. I visit her at least once per week in the nursing home but I get nervous about bringing B because of the germs. I know she'd love to see him and she said so but she has the same concerns. I brought the video camera today in for her to see him playing in the tub. She loved it. I just feel terrible because she was always a go getter, independent, a spit fire and now she's bed ridden and miserable.

  • Bring him in!  Get a photo of them together, get them on video playing peek-a-boo.  Germs suck but they are just germs.  How often do little ones get to be with great grandparents?
Exactly this. When my grandma was in the nursing home, it made her week (and all of the other residents and staff) when I would bring the kids in to visit. DD was only 5-6 months old at the time, DS was 2.5. I cherish the memories and photos I have of her and my children.
  • Bring lo in for a visit, get some photos and frame one for beside her bed.

Also is there a mobile spa where you're located that could come give her a mani or something?

What about a book or movie to pass the time?

  • I am sorry to hear that. :(

Would she like to do something like this for you & B?
    Grandma, Tell Me Your Memories
If she gets tired you can fill it out for her while she dictates.  It's something you can use to remember her and you guys can spend time together. :)

We actually got her one a few years ago but she always puts it off. Maybe we can get her to fill it out now. I also like the idea of me helping her fill it out!
