How much do you pump during the day?

My other discussion about solids got me thinking... My LO was only eating 9-10oz/day while I was at work (10hrs), part of the reason why I felt this was normal was because I can only ever pump 9-10oz while working. Stands to reason that LO should only eat as much as I pump.. right?

For those whose LO's eat 24oz while at daycare.. how do you keep up? or are you on formula?

Re: How much do you pump during the day?

  • My LO drinks 21 oz at daycare + 2-3 oz to mix with cereal.  We also use another 2-3 oz for cereal with his dinner meal.

I pump 3 times while at work and usually get around 18-20 oz.  Then I pump again at night before I go to bed to make up the difference.

Rhys eats 13 oz (in 8 hours!) with the nanny. I pump 3 times at work and get 12-14 oz. Occasionally I will have to pump a little more when I get home to make up the difference, and occasionally I get an extra oz and freeze it.

  • I'm gone for six hours and Ashley eats eight ounces. I was keeping up or having over but the last month I have been short. I'm trying not to stress about it and I dip into my stash.

  • I pump at home in the morning and get around 9-10 oz, DH feeds her a 4 oz bottle before daycare. She eats 12 oz while at daycare from 9:30-5:30.  I pump 3 times at work and get 12-13oz.

  • My son ate 20 ounces over the course of 9 hours. My daughter has 15 ounces over 10 hours. For both I was able to pump just what they needed (sometimes a little more or less depending on night time/morning eating patterns. I always pump the same number of times as bottles I send. If I'm a little short, I add in a session over the weekend or after baby goes to bed. And if my supply tanks for reason (such as illness of either of us), I pump more times during the day for a few days to get my supply up (similar to how baby would nurse for the same purpose if we were together).
  • I pump 3x during the day. First pump is in the morning on my drive to work in the car at 6am. I have an hour commute and pump the entire way there. I'll typically get around 11-13 oz, on good days 15oz. Second pump is at 10:30 and I'll pump for about 20 minutes. I typically get 4-6oz. Third pump is on my drive home at 3:30 and I typically get about 6-8 oz. Occasionally, I'll have to pump again at night if I don't get up to 24 oz.

    No formula.

  • For a while there, I was keeping up with her 12 ounces a day, but not lately and I'm not that concerned. She needs to go up to 14-16 ounces a day and even though I pump 2-3 times a day, I'm not getting much. I'm going to pump when I can and fill in the gaps with my freezer stash and formula. Whatevs.

  • I pump first thing in the morning every day and get 12-14 oz then. DS always has a bottle then or I would be choking him with milk anyway. I pump twice at work for another 6-10 oz depending on the day. Most days I make more than enough, which is great because I'm using that huge freezer stash from 10-12 months and will stop pumping!

  • interesting...i pump twice at work--10 and 1. i usually get anywhere from 10-13 ounces a day. i also pump once at night. we have been able to keep up with his eating and accumulate a freezer stash, which is refreshing, we had a little trouble in the beginning.

    I work 2 days/week, and DD3 gets 3 bottles while I'm gone each day. I pump between 12-15oz and just split that into her bottles. (I pump 3x - usually 8:30, 12:30, 4:30.)

  • Bradley gets 17.5 oz in a 10 hr period. I pump 5 to 7 times and get around 11-15 oz. I pump on the weekends to make up the difference.

  • Most breast feeding resources (check out kellymom.com) will say 1-1.5 oz per hour you are away. I'm gone a total of about 13 hours and he usually drinks about 14 oz. We used to do 4 3oz bottles but then switched to 3 4oz bottles and he gets about 2 more oz to hold him over for me to get home. I pump three times at work (should be four, but as a nurse it's nearly impossible) and usually get right at 14oz. Sometimes I only get 11-12 oz, but I only work twice a week so i can pump extra on the days I don't work to make up for it.

  • I used to pump more like 12-16 oz... Now it's more like 10-12. On a "long" day (LO is with nanny from 7-4:30) he will takes like, 10-12 ounces max. I would freak out based on the number of ounces other babies are eating, but Warner is a hefty dude (70th percentile weight). He also nurses 512 times at night (oh boy). So I guess this doesn't answer your question very well since LO isn't drinking crazy amounts of BM while I'm a work! Gah, bump reply fail......

  • Also remember a pump is not as good at getting out milk as LO is!! So you may only pump 2 oz at a session but baby could get more like 4 oz during a feeding. Some women respond better to a pump than others. So pump output isn't a good indication of supply.

  • I work 10-12 hour shifts and pump three times - 10am, 1 pm, and 4pm. I usually get around 16 oz during the day. I also pump in the morning before work and can usually get about 10 oz then (LO is almost always still asleep when I leave - so 6 oz for her morning bottle, 4 oz stashed). She usually eats 20 or so oz while I'm gone (including the first bottle). I sometimes pump at night after she's gone to bed and get a few oz then, too.

  • I pump three sessions at work, 7am (when I arrive), 11am and 2pm, I leave at 4pm and get home around 5:30 and he nurses then.

I get 22 - 25 ounces a day from my work pumping, he eats 15 ounces a day in three bottles when I am at work, so I freeze 10 ounces a day extra.

I am thinking about cutting down pumping at work since I always feel overfull on the weekends or days off since he doesn't keep up with nursing the same amount I pump.

  • I only get about 7 oz when I pump at work. DD eats about 15 oz while I"m gone, so we have to supplement with formula.  I *think* it's a pumping issue, not a supply issue because she seems happy enough when I can breastfeed only, like on the weekends.

  • I try to pump twice a day when I'm at work (8-4:30) but that doesn't always happen. Because of that my pump output is terrible and I've almost gone through my recent freezer stash. I'm so tired of the stress of pumping and worrying about getting enough that I am really considering supplementing while she's at daycare. Her recent hunger strike has been the only way I've avoided it this far. I have a lot of older frozen milk from about June but am too scared to use it since they say it's only good for 3 months in a freezer.

  • Ohhh! Thanks Grace!
