NA14R - Cold weather people - need tips for staying warm

DS is still playing outdoor soccer and has some games this weekend and next.  At the time of one of his games, it is expected to be 17 degrees - the rest of the weekend will be just slightly warmer but cloudy and windy.  I will be standing on the sidelines so not generating much body heat.  He has to be in his soccer uniform (shorts and short sleeved jersey) but can layer underneath.  He has played in somewhat cold weather before but not this cold so I need some help.

He has one under armour shirt for layering under his uniform - if I get a 2nd one will that double up the warmth or do they have to be against the skin?  Are there foot warmers I can put in his shoes while he is running or will they be annoying?  His soccer socks are not all that warm.

Can I justify buying some under armour for myself since my normal long underwear don't fit me right now?  Or would you just try to make due with what you have?

What else can I do to make sure we don't freeze?  We will be outside a total of 4hours tomorow and 2 hours Sunday.  Next weekend will be similar.

  • Layers. Scarf. Warm beverages. Walking laps. I don't recommend foot warmers, but you can get some thin wool socks to wear under his uniform. Up to you on buying new thermals for your pregnant self, I would raid dh's closet first.

  • @ksulli - good advice, but DH will be there too and I am pretty sure he only has one set.

  • @jellysparkles - thank you.  I did not think of him getting all sweaty and wet and then having to play again.  This is going to cost me a freaking fortune at Dicks.  We are normally finished with soccer at this point so I only have a couple of things for him.  I do plan to bring blankets and I am wearing my winter boots.

  • @Ooopsbaby14 - he is 8.

Thanks for the sleeping bag suggestion. Did not even think of that. I will bring umbrellas too.

  • BOGS boots. Saved my life, seriously. I always have cold feet and winter is always awful. This are awesome. Otherwise my winter coat is really just my spring/fall jacket with a zip-up fleece under, warm scraf, a fleece lined hat, and mittens. I also wear CuddlDuds under my pants, the sport ones.

I actually really like foot warmers! Maybe leave them out for just a bit after taking them out of the package so that they're not full-strength hot when you put them in your son's shoes. I think they're a great idea, especially if he's going to be all sweaty (sweat = cold, so foot warmers would keep him warm...and sweaty :). They're super cheap, so why not? He can always toss 'em mid game.

  • I used to play soccer all of the time in the snow and rain and crappy weather and I will just tell you that you will be much colder sitting on the sideline than he will be on the field.  Once you get running around it's really not that bad, the worst thing is cold air in your lungs when you are out of breath and the cold ball hitting bear skin.  I would suggest just one long sleeve shirt/sweatshirt underneath his uniform and one layer under the shorts.  We used to have warm ups for before the game that had the pants with zippers in the ankle you could easily put on and off over shoes.  Those can get pretty expensive though.  Have a heavy coat or blanket and maybe a hat and some gloves ready when he comes out or for half time to keep him warm.  That is when he is going to get cold, after he stops running around.  I would not put foot warmers in the shoes, they are liable to cause blisters and be really annoying when he runs and could make him prone to injury. Also, if the feet start to sweat too much it can cause the skin to get kind of pruney which makes it tear when you try to change directions quickly.  Believe me, this happened to me and it was a very painful experience!!  (I'm not saying this will happen, it's usually a muggy summer time thing, but I have no idea what foot warmers might do!)  Just double up on socks and he should be fine!  Also remember that it isn't the end of the world if he is slightly uncomfortable for a short period of time....it builds character.....lol.....at least that's what they always told me!!

  • @spano41 - great advice. Thank you! I will skip the foot warmers. He does have the pants with the zippers on the sides so we'll start out with those over everything. And I have hats, gloves, neck gators for the sidelines. I will just bundle myself up and bring blankets for everyone.

  • You have gotten great advice.  I'm just going to add that if you will be standing on the sidelines, bring some cardboard to stand on.  It is a great insulator against the frozen ground.  If I have to stand on the snow, even in Sorrel boots, I will stand on cardboard and it makes a huge difference.

This might also help if you're sitting on cold bleachers.
