pity party for cup transition problems

I know there are a bunch of us struggling to transition to the cup.  What have you tried?  Are you doing BM, WCM or Formula in the cup?  warm or cold?  trading out one bottle for one cup, or going wholesale?  Do you have a goal or timeline?  any helpful resources to share?

come share your sob stories and successes!  I need some social support from other struggling families!

Re: pity party for cup transition problems

  • Hey there! I am sorry you are having troubles. I started at 6 or 7 months offering the nuby and I forget the other type the ones with handles and soft spots but my kid never liked them. Then I tried a doc brown, and BRU brand, and then bought the BRU brand straw cup and he loved it! But let me go back, I realized he could use the straw when I realized that he could suck out of the pouches. Honestly you just have to try different cups and be patient. They get it one day. We started with water and I have put formula in there a couple of times and he takes it. GL Oh, and I only do room temperature liquids but I plan to serve cold wcm. My goal is to get rid of all bottles expect night one a month or two after he turns one. Only because he is not attached to the bottle. Currently he only takes 3 bottles in a day so I am hoping the transition will be smooth but who knows

  • LO loves water in a sippy (Foogo spout cup).  But the milk is a whole other story.  We've tried Tommy Tippee straw cups (hated them!), the Sassy no-spout cup (she was interested until she tasted it, but milk was going everywhere), and the same foogo spout ones she uses for water (she ducks her head and hands the cup back).  I've tried room temp BM and room temp or cold WCM.  As soon as she tastes that it isn't water (or isn't warm?), she rejects it.

She'll happily down warm BM from her bottle, and has even had 3/4BM+1/4WCM fine from the bottle.

We tried replacing one bottle with the sippy in each day over the weekend but we just ended up with a hungry baby in the middle of the night.  So now I offer the milk sippy with dinner, but we are still giving her regular bottles.  So, we basically aren't feeling like we're making any progress...

I haven't found any good web resources discussing this-- anyone else find anything?

I feel like this might be gearing up for a looooooong struggle/transition.  Ironic how she fought the bottle with a vengeance for the first few months I went back to work, and would starve herself during the day to avoid it, and now she doesn't want to give it up...

  • i'll join your pity party. mine will drink water out of the sippy with no problem. she only wants her milk in a bottle and warm. i've decided that it may be a slow process and to just wait it out. she drinks 50/50 WCM and BM in a bottle and warm at lunch, dinner and bedtime. i still nurse her in the morning before breakfast. currently, my plan is to get her on 100% WCM and then start slowly decreasing the temp until she is drinking it cold. then i'll worry about switching to a sippy.
This is us....except we are already 100% WCM. He gave me no issues going to WCM at all, however, he refuses to take anything but water from cup and refuses to take milk cold. Still needs to be warm. Once his ear surgery is over tomorrow and he is back to healthy I will start working in it. Going to work in WCM first, then will drop bottles except for night bottle. Then will work on night bottle. Hoping by 18 months to be completely done.

  • Trying our first milk in a sippy today. I have a feeling that I may be joining this pity party tomorrow. Fingers crossed she does well! Hope your LO'S get the hang of it soon.

FWIW, my pedi didn't push the switch at all and just said give her the milk however she'll drink it. I'm still sending BM and she only gets 2 bottles a day so I'm wondering if that is why she didn't seem to mind the bottle.

  • I just started putting one bottle a day of formula in a sippy.  He has been using a sippy for water (straw and spout) ones since 6 months.  He seems to be fine drinking it out of a sippy. Next week, I am going to start the transition to WCM.
  • I'll join your party. My LO will only drink water out of her sippy. I am trying to introduce WCM via the sippy and it's been a no go so far. I haven't tried warming it up yet as I didn't want to have to do it all the time, but it looks like we are headed in that direction. I will probably try that tomorrow. And if that doesn't work then it will go into a bottle. I wish my boobies made enough milk but they don't. :(

  • Sippy cup training has been interesting. he would drink water out of just about any cup (we started with water at 6 months) but not the milk. Most of the sippy cups with milk were coming out too fast and he didn't like it. I was able to get him to drink it when I watered it down. 3/4 milk to 1/4 water. I then found a sippy cup that was slow enough for him (he was only on a 2 nipple) and now he's drinking it wihtout watering it down. He still doesn't drink it like he does water but it's better than before. I will also water it down if I put it in the other sippys we have.
The one that works for him is the Comforts for Toddler 6-12 month from Fry's/Kroger.
The one's he had issues with, Nuby 10+ month- too wide and too much. Avent spout that goes in his bottles- didn't like the rubber spout on that one. He uses the Playtex little gripper trainger straw sippy cup without an issue for water. he loves that one for water. You can squeeze it to show them stuff comes out of it and it gets them sucking.
