If you are hosting T'giving at your home, when do you...

Find time to clean the house, and
Find time to cook?

Even though I SAH, I barely find the time to keep up with laundry (daily loads b/c we CD), and cook every single meal for the 3 of us. Just don't know how on earth I"m supposed to find the time to cook a T'giving meal?

ETA: only MIL/FIL/SIL are coming, so there will be 5 of us + DS.  SIL has to take the bus to our place, so she can't really bring much.  MIL/FIL just moved out here yesterday, not sure how much cooking they can get done when they'll be busy unpacking.  Even though there is only 5 of us, I think they're still expecting the whole turkey (which I ordered), stuffing, gravy, 2 veggie dish, bread rolls, and 2 pies.

  • I'm not hosting on Thanksgiving, my mom is but we have a "friendsgiving" the Saturday after Thanksgiving at our house.  Last year, my best friend and her husband came over early and helped us clean and cook and get everything ready.  This year they are doing that again and I'm just finishing up the playroom off the kitchen for the kids to play in this year so hopefully it will all work out.  Get as much as you can done, but you have a child, if they don't like the way your house is they can leave. That is how I feel.  I also purchase the pies and rolls from Sam's club the day before or that morning so its less to cook.

  • Order the pies, too? Also, crock pot. I make a potato dish and veggie casserole in crock pots a day or 2 early, plug in the day of. Plus, DH is on baby duty when I'm busy prepping to host people the day of.
We aren't hosting thanksgiving, but do Christmas Eve.
  • I will be doing a lot of prepping and cooking the night before when Ashley is asleep. My husband always deep fries the turkey and everyone is bringing something too. Also I am trying to make as much as possible disposable. For example all the dishes that will hold the food are tinfoil along with plastic forks and serving spoons. I will make mashed potatoes the night before and the next morning put them in the crockpot to reheat with a crock pot liner. The stuffing I will bake also in a tinfoil casserole dish..again all disposable.
  • My husband and I will be doing the cooking and hosting this year for a full house. The trick is to make the full house watch the baby ;-)

Oh, and I spread the prep work and cooking/baking over two to three days. I am taking a half day off work on Wednesday and using that extra time to bake pies, prep vegetables and side dishes, assemble casseroles (and refrigerate), and make deviled eggs. On Thursday, I'll make biscuits, bake casseroles, make mashed potatoes, and finish up whatever dishes I couldn't assemble the night before. My husband handles the turkey and the gravy. I managed to pull this off seamlessly and stress-free two years ago, so I am hoping that I can do it again as long as family helps out with DS (and I think they'll be happy to).

  • @pb_bride, Is there a bakery in town that you could get your pies from? That would save you a ton of time. And rolls from the store are just fine. A lot of vegetable sides can be very simple and delicious -- I love the ones from Real Simple magazine. But don't stress! Pick recipes that are doable and sound good and outsource when you can! Honestly, I made a homemade apple a couple weeks ago from scratch, and when it was all done, I kept thinking I'd have preferred a frozen one :-S lol...Thanksgiving is about spending time with family and appreciating life, so make it easy on yourself. Maybe people's expectations aren't as high as you think.
