Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Anyone ever taken control?

It was exactly a week yesterday since I lost our 1st pregnancy naturally.it was one of the hardest things I've ever experienced but I am trying to move forward and am looking ahead. I have severe endo which makes me estrogen dominant so I cant help but want to protect myself and get a head start to taking progesterone when we are ready to try again in the new year. I don't think my doc will prescribe it for me blaming this 1st loss on a chromosome defect. He has never checked my levels. Has anyone taken the matter into their own Hands by using progesterone cream without a go ahead from the doc? I know as long as it taken correctly there is no harm. I just can't sit around and wait for another loss for them to tell me I have low progesterone and then treat me.

  • I could have written this myself!!! very similar situation!!!

I had laprocopic surgery in sept 2010 and got pregnant just 2 months later. we were trying for a year before the surgery. when I couldnt bet pregnant I was looking into any and every "natural/non invasive" option available to us. I found a dr who was a fertility care specialist. basically deals with fertility with no "extreme measures". i.wanted to exhaust all of my options before moving towards other options like iui or ivf etc. I got pregnant before my first appt, but she wanted to see me right away. tested my progesterone and put me on injections immediately. I was on the injections until I was 30 weeks pregnant. my regular ob never even mentioned my progesterone levels to me during my pregnancy. but the fertility dr obviously thought they were low because she had me on the injections for so long.
take two...same thing happened this time but sadly I miscarried at 8 weeks. my ob (who I love and trust immensely) told me that progesterone supplements are no longer needed after first tri. he told me the same thing as your doctor...first miscarriage is likely a chromosome defect if I have another one (praying I dont) then they will look into the endo. I dont know if I will go to the fertility dr again because it was an awful experience this time in regards to the misscarriage. but im concerned if I dont go to her, my regular ob wont put me on the progesterone. I like you, want to be on it before im pregnant. I would never forgive myself if I have another miscarriage because of low progesterone. sorry this was so long, but I totally can relate to your situation with the endo. feel free to email me valcon23@yahoo.com anytime. im interested in how you proceed
sidenote...I went to acupuncture two or three times a week and I swear it helped me get pregnant and stay pregnant the first time. ive been told endo can cause week follicles which acupuncture can supposedly help?
  • also, im so sorry for your loss

  • So helpful, thank you. I had my lap surgery in July and got pregnant in September. Also started acupuncture 2 months before I got pregnant but once I told her I was pregnant she said she couldn't continue till I got to my 2nd trimester cause of miscarriage risk.
  • Thank you, I just thought I had to go straight to an ob. Do you think he would recommend an re for me?
  •  Yes, you should defenitely look for a dfferent doctor. My midwives tested my progesterone, no problem. i was actually on progesterone (crinone) during this pregnancy I just lost (so I know I didnt lose it from that, it was most likely chromeosonal due to my age).

With a prior loss, they should absolutely test you.
  • Thank you ladies, so helpful
  • This is so crazy! I had the exact same conversation with my husband last night! I would hate to get pregnant again and god forbid have the same thing happen and then have my ob tell me it is my progesterone levels. Im someone who likes to be in control so I opted to look for a natural vitamin that would cause no harm. I found one called vitex. I also found an all natural cream from Beeyoutiful.com. I ordered them both and I got the cream a couple days ago. I havent even taken it out of the box because it kind of scares me:) im waiting on the vitamins. I plan on calling my ob before I use either. When we had our last appointment to decide on a d&c, I asked her about the possibility of my progesterone levels being low and she looked and me and said I didnt have to worry about that. How can she just know? Doesnt seem right to me. Im also on the hunt for a new ob or office to help me out further. Good luck!
  •  The ob DOESN'T know-glad you are getting a new one! It's a simple blood draw-I don't know what their issue is with ordering it. My midwives ordered it for me with both pregnancies this year. I asked, and they were willing since I'd had a loss. Mine came back normal both times, but they even gave me a scrip for it this last time.

Push on this! Don't let them put you off.
  • I had my 2 week post d&c follow up today. my doctor was really receptive to my concerns. he did say he can understand my concerns, but if we are "over aggressive" with treatment prematurely, it can do more harm then good. I also, mentioned my concern about my progesterone being low and he said when (trying to stay positive) I get pregnant again to come in to the office immediately and they will test my progesterone. and they will put me on progesterone supplements. I asked him if I could take them now and he said no way because it will prevent me from ovulating. which I had no idea! I really think its important to talk to your doctor about this stuff or before taking anything. if you arent clicking with your doctor or arent satisfied with your options find someone you are comfortable with. I just feel so nervous about trying again.

I completely agree with this. Definitely don't let them ignore you or pass over your concerns - you employ them, you cut their checks, you are the boss! And if they continue acting like your concerns aren't valid, find someone who cares and listen to what they have to say. I get the logic of waiting to medicate yourself, but I might add that you might want to take a blood draw once your first period sets in to see where your levels are and have your OB moderate them based on that reading, then do another blood draw THE MOMENT you have a positive pregnancy test to moderate those levels - separately. You know your body and your babies; trust your instincts and do what you feel is best.

    Wishing you all the best!
