2 year old & potty training

My 2 & 1/2 year old DS is refusing to try potty training. Every chance I get, I try to get him to use the potty. Every time he says NO! I try to get him to sit on the potty and you would think I was torturing him. It's impossible to get him on it. If I hold him down, it gets worse & doesn't help. It just makes him not want to use the potty even more. I have a box full of toys, "Potty Prizes". Nothing. He is quite happy doing his business in his pull ups. The reason he is in a pull up? Because he no longer fits in diapers. Soon he will not fit in the pull ups either. (He is a growing boy, 90% percentile.)

I need help. Does anyone have any suggestions to get him to go?

  • Agree with PP.  He is not ready.  Went thru same thing with DS.  He wasn't even interested until he was close to 3 and things really picked up once he got in preschool and saw that all the others kids were going potty.  Then it was a piece of cake!!

  • I have heard from many experienced people that on average boys are usually closer to 3 or a little older so I agree with pp that's he probably not ready. I do feel bad about your sizing issue. That is tough. Have you asked the pedi. his advice on that?

  • Thanks everyone. I'll try again in a few months. Hopefully he won't have any growth spurts. He is currently in a 4T/5T pull up. Do you know if they make a larger size than that?
  • Yeah I wouldn't push it either. You'll make it worse down the line.

My almost 2.5 year old has no interest in potty training either. Whatever. My pedi said it wasn't a big deal anyways until way after 3 and they'll do better if allowed to do it in their own time.
