S/O homemade bread

For those of you who make your own bread, do you use a bread machine or just put it in the oven? I started making a wheat sandwich bread recently because I got tired of overspending for poor quality and preservatives at the store. But the recipe I have is for a bread machine. Is there any way to translate an oven recipe over to the bread machine? I love that I don't have to be home while it's baking.

  • I'd love a good easy bread recipe to start with.

  • My mom gave me a bread machine and I have never used it. It bread better in the machine?
  • We just gave our bread machine to Goodwill. I like it for making dough, but think it always overcooks the bread.

I have tried every setting on that damn thing and many different recipes, and never got a loaf I was truly happy with. Bread is much better out of the oven.

I've made bread w/out my bread machine and I think it's much better using the bread machine. It probablyseems better to me because the machine doesn't overwork the dough so the bread is never tough. It stays nice and light. The cleanup is also nice and easy so it's totally worth it.

  • I gave it back to her because I never used it. Never had a recipe or an instruction book with it.
  • I agree with @flamingemu, I feel like every loaf I've ever made in the bread machine comes out tough.

Not better, just more convenient IMO

I've found some on Pinterest, but they always seem to be specifically for the oven or the machine. I'm not sure how to translate on to the other.

  • I make almost all of my bread in the bread machine, unless I know in advance I'm making something like lasagna and we want Italian, then I make the no knead bread in the dutch oven.  The only bread I don't make in my bread machine is an English Muffin bread that we use for toast, sandwiches, etc.  It's fantastic, makes 2 loaves and is so easy I don't even need to get my stand mixer out.
For bread machine recipes, try googling.  I've found a ton of good ones online and it's just trial and error.  The English Muffin bread is by far my favorite though.

    My gramma.

    That doesn't help,does it?

You are the definition of helpful ;)

I'll search around. I think I may have a bread cook book actually.

  • Sandwich bread I make in the machine, because it makes a tighter, more sliceable loaf.

Eating bread I make in the oven.

This is my go to recipe for bread machine bread:

  • I make mine in the oven. No bread machine here, but i love to knead. :P

If you want to switch methods with your recipe, I'd suggest finding a similar recipe of the other type and then use those measurements to play with the proportions on the recipe you like. Does that make sense?

I have some really great recipes from culinary school. I make bread for special occasions/meals, though I should probably do it regularly. It's easy stuff once you get used to it. There's a little bit of a learning curve, but once you understand what the dough is supposed to look like, you're good.

If you're interested I can send you some recipes. I do it all in the oven.

I also have a friend who swears by this book. She makes bread all the time. I have no direct experience with it though.
Yes, @harti09, I'd love some recipes. Thanks!

  • Mee too @harti09!  I'm off for almost 3 weeks at Christmas and plan to be domestic and frugal, since I also don't get paid for any days that aren't holidays. :-)

  • Would you mind emailing them to me?  I don't check TB from home because I can't respond from my Kindle and don't venture into the basement where the desktop is very often. :-)

@MarisaKathleen, you were right, English Muffin bread is delish! I made it yesterday morning, and it was a hit.

  • I love my bread machine. It makes perfect GF bread every time. The one time I tried making it in the oven, my loaf rose too much and was stuck on the roof of the oven.
