Parenting after a Loss

Suggestions for infant toys

Good morning ladies! I know I don't post here all that often, but I do value all of the information and advice I get as a lurking new mommy. :)
Today I have a specific request. Can you recommend toys your baby loves/loved? With the holidays approaching, people are asking what to buy Cole and he is pretty set on clothes. (I'm having waaaay too much fun dressing my little man!) For reference, he is 3 months old now.
I'd really like some toys that he can enjoy right away but transition with him as he grows, too. But I can't think of much beyond the activity table that sits on the floor for crawlers and rises up on legs when they start standing up.
What are/were some of your LO's most loved toys? Were there any toys that stuck around as your LO grew? What things were a waste of time/money? I really appreciate your input!

  • Mini ball pits are awesome. We propped the boys up in them and they enjoyed kicking the balls. They still play with the balls at almost 20m old. Vtech also has a sit to stand walker that was great. It stuck around until recently.

Well, my DD loves her exersaucer.  I think bath toys are awesome and M loves them!  That was something that I didn't really buy for myself but have gotten as gifts.  We have also gotten several wooden toys that I thought DD was too young for but turns out she has loved them since 3 months.  There was this wooden rain maker thing that she like to roll around with on the floor and it makes noise.  We also got a couple of toys similar to the link.  I thought she would be too young for them but she loved trying to get the little blocks out and chew on them.  She is just now starting to try to figure out how to get them back in so we have definitely gotten a lot of use out of it.  Books are always good too.  Oh, and balls.  Oballs in particular.  (SWIDT?? :) )

These are great suggestions! Rainmakers and any kind of music-making toys (shakers, rattles, bells, that sort of thing) are awesome. DD still plays with all of that stuff she got when she was much smaller. She also loves her Oball, and it was particularly nice at that age because it was easy to grip! Touch and feel books are also wonderful. She still loves those and books are nice because they really do grow with your child.

DD never liked her exersaucer, though we did have a play gym that she loved for a few months, probably between 4 and 7 months? But then she got too big for it. I'm thinking about getting it out again now and using it like a little tunnel, with a blanket draped over the rails.

  • Thank you so much for all the great suggestions! Some of this stuff we already have, (hand me downs) but never thought of trying out so soon. Maybe I'm just in denial about my baby getting bigger.

Off to go research some of these cool toys!

  • And thanks for the rec of the Oball! He was playing with one yesterday at Book Baby (library class) but I didn't know the name of it. :)

  • DD loves musical toys. We had a Baby Einstein Musical Turtle ( https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Neptune-Orchestra-Musical/dp/B004G8QSY4) and I just bought her a Fisher Price remote ( https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Clickn-Remote/dp/B00CQHZ0ZK/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1385063258&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+remote).  She loved the playmat and still uses it at 8 months. She also likes her jumperoo. She loves anything soft like stuffed animals, blankets, etc.

    AL always welcome!

  • Both of my boys love(d) the ExerSaucer...we have the a Evenflo triple fun one and it even withstood my MIL and DHs stupidity (they let the 2 year old play in it when I was sick).

Really though we used a lot of simple things like the FP plastic rings and balls. Our playmat has gotten briefly used from maybe 4-6 months by each LO.

  • My Lo only liked her jumper from about 4months-7 months.

The Fisher laugh and learn activity table has been a hit since last xmas when she got it (7mo) until now.  She loves the music setting most.

Balls are a consistent hit.  Duplos, but my LO is just not really playing with them at 18 months. She got very frustrated with them from ~14mo-recently bc she couldn't actually do them herself but wanted to.

Seconding the jumper.  We have this and DS loves it: https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-K6070-Rainforest-Jumperoo/dp/B000LXQVA4/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1385131428&sr=1-1&keywords=rainforest+jumperoo

We started putting him in in at around 6 months old and now at 9 months he is still way into it.  Plus it's a great way to have him with me in the kitchen while I am making dinner.

  • @Mmm79, that is the jumperoo we have! (hand-me-down from my sister) I've already tried to put him in it and he loves the monkey & elephant noises it makes. But he's still too short to touch the ground so he doesn't last long. We can't wait til he's big enough to fully enjoy it!
