Elizabeth

Tell me your first reaction to this name.

DH wanted to name our DD Elizabeth but I convinced him to go another route.  When he found out #2 was on the way, he "decided" that if this baby was a girl it was going to be Elizabeth because he didn't get it the first time.  I don't dislike the name....but I don't love it either.  I love the nickname possibilities but something about it makes me bored with the name.  DH would call her Lizzie so I tried suggesting Eliza but it was vetoed.  Just curious what would pop into your head when you heard it.

ETA: I meant to say that I asked about giving her the first name of Eliza instead of Elizabeth.  DH could still call her Lizzie if he wanted.....but I like the sound of Eliza a little more than Elizabeth.

Have you considered a variant of Elizabeth?  I recognize the elegance and regality of Elizabeth, though like you, I find it somewhat boring for some reason. Having said that, I like some of the [other language] variants better.

  • Lizzie is my least favorite of all the Elizabeth nicknames. I love Beth, Betsy and Betty. Eliza is a lovely variant. Don't settle for Elizabeth if you don't love it. You both have to love it.

  • I adore this name! If it wasn't already DD1's middle name, I'd have used it as a FN for this baby. I like all the nickname options, especially the more unusual ones like Effy and Betsy.

  • I prefer Elisabeth.  I love the nicknames Elsa, Libby, Bess, Betsy
  • I'm with you. Elizabeth is okay and all, just pretty meh for me. Honestly, it's nice that you're considering the NNs or a variant of Elizabeth for a compromise, but if you don't want to use the name, you don't want to use it. It's both of your baby, and you have every right to veto a name you don't want to use. It's going to be her name forever. Sometimes the best option is settling on a compromise (it might be impossible to find a name you both LOVE). But no one gets to call dibs because you didn't use the name last time. You didn't like it enough to use it then, and you don't now. I kind of think that would keep the name off the table...

  • I like Elizabeth but prefer is full form, no nn. I dislike how DH is saying it has to be Elizabeth though, you get a say too.

  • I say let him have it.  You really can't go wrong with Elizabeth.  Lizzie, Lisbeth, Libbie, Liza - all cute nn for Elizabeth.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • Elizabeth is a great name as you can call her so many different NNs. My name is a NN for Elizabeth but all my friends who were named Elizabeth had different nicknames so they still were able to have an ability to be themselves.

  • I love Elizabeth. Its so classic and pretty. It is my middle name (a family name) and will be this babies middle name if its a girl.

  • I have an Elizabeth. I called her Libby more than Elizabeth in the beginning and now I find myself calling her Elizabeth a lot more. My DH only calls her by her full name. One time he sent me a text shortening her name to Beth, said he was "trying it out". I had never liked the name until my nurse told me about the nickname Libby. She didn't have a name until right before we left the hospital. Now I love her name and am very glad we went with it. It has definitely grown on me.

  • I'd use Elizabeth if I didn't have so many bad associations with it. You've got a lot of options to find a nickname that you like!
  • I love it and we plan on using it if we have another girl

  • We went back and forth on Caroline and Elizabeth, but used Caroline instead. If we have another girl she will most likely be named Elizabeth.

  • My full name is Elizabeth. And well I really don't like it! It's a solid name though that's very classic. I'm glad I'm not name something weird for suree. But its so long and can be boring that most other Elizabeth's I have known end up with a variant nickname they go by. I have gone by Liz, Lizzie, Eli. Beth honestly I never thought of going by, its too meeky quiet girl sounding. I would have much preferred Elizabeth as a middle name. That's just my take.
