Kinda Down: Low AMH

edited November 2013 in TTC after 35
I just received my AMH test results and I have an AMH of 0.72.  I'm 39.  I was told that the normal range was between 1.0 and 4.0.  I know AMH measures the quantity of eggs, not the quality nor does it necessarily determine your odds of getting pregnant by itself, but boy, the news was a bummer.

Thinking ice cream. haha

I want to go home, get in the bed and pull the covers up over my head.  Boo.

EDIT: Not sure why the title is not appropriately capitalized.  It is in my post. More boos.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

Re: Kinda Down: Low AMH

  • Oh no, sorry you got not so great news.  However, it is not horrible.  Try and stay positive, even though it can be so hard at times.

  • I agree with Private. It's definitely not horrible. Actually I think it is age appropriate! It is also just one piece of the puzzle to be looked it in conjunction with your AFC, FSH and E2. Finally it says nothing about the quality of the eggs left--just that they are depleting which, sadly, is to be expected at 39.

  • I agree with the others. I'm waiting for my AMH level too it's the one test that's not back yet for me. My last AMH was .93 and I'm thinking I'm a year older so it's going to be lower but who knows how much. I like your idea of covers and ice cream :). Hang in there your AMH could be lower and I've seen women with a much lower AMH get pregnant!

Me 38 MH 41 - TTC since June 2010 - dx with Severe MFI. Straight to IVF with ICSI. • I have a friend who was 40 with an AMH of around .20 and FSH in the high 30's. She got pregnant from her 1st try at IVF where they only retrieved 2 eggs.  Keep thinking anything is possible and I will be successful.

On a side note, I had my first AMH test at 41 and it was .66.  At 43, I had it retested as I was seeing a new RE in a different state and he required another. It came back at 1.0. I was floored that it increased after growing older.  The RE said it was probably the difference in the testing lab as all not equal when it comes to reporting results.  I like to think it was all me and that I was more healthy two years later and my body was rewarding me for it, lol :)

  • Hi, ClaireHuxtable! I want to give you a little hope. Last November (2012), my AMH level was .32. I was just retested last week by my RE. My AMH level came back at 1.3. That is quite a jump, isn't it!? And we did have a BFP this passed May (ended in m/c). So, keep your chin up, lady! :) What is your FSH??

  • I have a cousin who just gave birth to a healthy beautiful boy this past September.  She too had a very low AMH and went through a couple failed IVFs however she got her BFP at the age of 43 and was blessed, she never gave up.  Keep the faith and stay postive
    :)
  • I really do love this board.  Thank you! @on42 and @mouserNY

  • Mine is also on the lower end, other levels are good. My OB said it is normal for a 38 year old (almost 39) to have slightly diminished reserve. That test result, combined with a slightly abnormal SA for DH, led my OB to suggest starting IUI right away. So in some ways it is good, less time messing around with less effective treatment plans.

Me: 40, Hypothyroidism, well managed, TSH 1.99
DH: 44 Fine except for low morphology
    TTC since 02/2013
    08/13: Day 3 tests (ESTRADIOL 20.8; AMH 1.1; FSH 6.2)
    12/13 HSG, all clear
    11/13-5/14 - IUIs #1-3, BFNs,
6/14 to present: Taking a break, getting healthier, researching IVF
Planning for IVF in late summer 2015

  • If it makes you feel any better, I'm two years younger and my AMH is much lower than yours- it measures as "undetectable." It is a hard result to handle but people can and do get pregnant, so hang in there! I was so upset to hear my results. My RE just kept repeating "it's very low ... very very low" like he was in shock. Not confidence inspiring. Yours may be slightly below average for a 39 yr old but AMH is expected to decline up until you reach 40 and is not thought to a useful measure of ovarian reserve over age 40. How is your FSH and antral follicle count? It's really the whole picture the docs will want to consider.

    *Ticker/Siggy Warning*

Me: 37 DH: 38 TTC since 2011 DH normal Dx: DOR (AFC ranges from 6-11; AMH 0.16; FSH 11.9; E2 45) 11/13: 1st IVF converted to IUI due to poor response to high dose antagonist protocol (only 3 follies) = BFN 12/13: IUI #2 letrozole + Bravelle = BFP, beta #1 156, beta #2 196 (diff. lab), beta #3 1037; 1st ultrasound @ 5 wks 1 day = 6 mm gest sac; 2nd ultrasound 6 wks 1 day = tiny flickering heartbeat; 3rd ultrasound 7 wks 1 day 10.3 mm embie growing away!
