Success after IF

And so it begins - 5 LONG days

This morning I kissed my husband goodbye for what I know will be 5 very long days.  He is presenting a paper at a conference in DC and me?  I am here at home with all four kids.  Since he does the majority of drop-offs and pick-ups, him being gone affects me perhaps more than me being gone would affect him.  So, wish me luck on five days of solo parenting four kids while still trying to maintain my sanity both at work and at home.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I'm hoping my sister can pick the older two up from school Thursday and Friday which would be a huge help.  The worst part is just getting everyone home so late.  If we don't even get home until 6 then it's a mad rush since Sully and Maren go to bed by 7.

I'm also hoping my mom will have Sully sleepover at her house Thursday night.  He has speech therapy Friday morning which she is going to take him to so that would be fun for him and maybe easiest for her.  It's amazing how just having one less child makes things seem so much easier in the mornings and at bedtime.

@mcgeeva - it's all in what you're used to.  Being home with just one young child is hard.  It gets easier as they get older.  So, although I have four, I barely count the 7 and 4 year-old as they are actually more helpers.  So, go ahead and complain.  I know I would if my husband were gone every other week and I'd do that with one or probably even no kids!  And yes, multiple drop-offs/pick-ups suck a**.

  • Yeah I am scared about the day I take ds out of his home daycare for a more structured place but got I can't do two drop offs with my three hour a day drive. Well even with helpers they need attention so I'm sure you don't get a break till everyone passes out and by then your happy if you ate dinner :) yeay for family!!! I hope they can help you. My dad is spending te night tonight which he did a few weeks back just to come play with ds so I am thankful for that. My parents live hour half a way but my dad works 20 miles from me and will leave at 4 am for work as usual but they help for two hours before bed is Amazing!

  • So much sympathy heading your way! I will be solo parenting only 3 children for only 2 days starting tomorrow so I'm hoping I can keep it all together too.

It's times like these I realize what a good partner I have since his absence will be strongly missed.

I hope you at least have some friends or family members that can help you out a few times while your DH is away. Good luck mama!!

  • Good luck!  My DH just did the weekend without me 2 weeks ago...and he was fine.  I am the baby when I am home alone with all 3!  Although to be fair - when he has been out of town, they all got the stomach bug, and another time all the fire alarms in the house went off at 1am...I think I have PTSD just thinking about solo parenting for an extended time period again!

I am sure you will do great - everything will get done, just maybe slower than usual :)  Hopefully the days fly by for you!

  • Day one down.  I stopped at home super quick before I went to pick the kids up and threw dinner on plates so that when we all got home things were set out for them.  I can't tell you how much smoother that makes things go.  Hopefully I will have time to do that again tonight.

I'm also thanking my lucky stars that easily a year ago I bought a pack of girly sticker books and beginning reader books for easy birthday gifts since Quinn was invited yesterday morning to a classmates' birthday party on Sunday (what's up with such short notice?)  So, at least I don't have to drag them all out shopping on Saturday for a gift.  Now I just have to hope Chris can get home in time for the birthday party or that my mom can take her.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
