We actually didn't use a monitor. We had a (non-video) one, but she slept with us, and the bedroom wasn't far enough away from out living space that with the door open we could always hear her... But... I thought it might be helpful for others!
Definitely get a snuza. I truly believe it saved my son when he was 4-5 months old. We had had false alarms because I didn't have the diaper tight enough and it had fallen off, but one night it went off and I ran upstairs and into the nursery and placed my hand on him and I'm certain he wasn't breathing. With the stimulation from my hand he started breathing again. I will be using it again with the new baby.
I also have no idea how this happened. We used one with our son for 2 years and we place the pad under the mattress as instructed and fished the wire through the bottom part of the crib mattress support wiring. It would be impossible for a baby to get that wire unless they were able to pick up the mattress completely, removed up enough cord, put the mattress back down and somehow strangle themselves with it.
When it comes to baby crap 99 percent of recalls are due to people being dumb.

We have the Babysense one not the Angelcare one and I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how she could even reach the cord for it. :-S
