Getting bitten

E has been bitten 3 times in her 3 weeks at her new school. Hard enough to leave bruises. I'm not sure if it has been the same kid every time, I didn't think to ask until after I left. Anyone else deal with this? WWYD?

He hasn't bitten in over a month and he but her TWICE today. I feel like mother of the year over here. :( I am sorry about your LO. Hopefully they can get the biter in check!

  • From what I know about toddler behavior, biting and hitting is in the range of normal, unfortunately. However, there should be someone to correct the behavior immediately so that hopefully the biter stops biting. That sucks that E is being bitten so much :(

  • Our school has a biting policy, the teachers take steps to correct the behavior... At the very extreme they ask the parents to remove the child from the school until the biting stops. Definitely talk to the teacher! They should be correcting the biter...

  • I'm not sure how old the kids are. They all look much older than her and talk and stuff. I think they are 2 yos. I will ask about a corrective action, they paper we signed talks about their discipline plan. I should make sure it is being enforced.

  • H was bitten once. In the mornings all of the kids are together until 7:10-ish when every teacher gets there. The DC opens at 7 but myself and some other moms drop off early at 6:45. I know the teachers felt so bad and were probably dreading to tell me that afternoon but it didn't leave a bruise, just a little scratch. I know they talked to the biter and did their form of punishment and it hasn't happened since.

  • When I worked at a center we made sure to talk to both sets of parents, we also had handouts about biting. Unfortunately different kids bite for different reasons, sometimes it's teething other kids bite because they can't express their feelings. I would just let the teacher know if you are worried that your child has become a target. I would also find out if the bites are happening in the same location or time (getting ready to go outside, during diaper changes, before a meal and before nap are common times for kids to get frustrated).

  • @akb090609 Yes! I know one happened before lunch, and one while waiting to go outside. I didn't realize the frustration link.

@fabulouspinkmady The teacher wasn't very encouraging. She just said she tries to watch them, but biting happens.

  • I think three times is more than enough for them to change the situation. Pps gave great advice on that. Sorry you keep getting bit E. poor thing.

  • I'm only speaking from experience with children in foster care (we had a lot of biters in our program), but I thought many DCs had a written policy on biting. At least, that was the case for our kids. We even had a few be asked to leave the center all together, although they were older and the behavior was less likely due to age and more about past trauma. I assume the plan for toddlers is very different. It sounds like you've gotten some good advice and I hope little E can avoid the pain from here on out.

Anyway, I feel so bad for E, I've been bitten by the boys in the bicep area and it hurts SO bad!! Poor thing!

  • Well I talked to the morning teacher an she had no idea E was getting bitten. So apparently they are all happening in the afternoon. I asked the teacher if E was getting picked on bc she is the baby in the 2 yo room, and she said no, E holds her own and is quite bossy. Hmm, wonder where she gets that??

  • Oh, my gosh I'm so sorry! I'd be upset and would want to know 1) how she is being left unattended long enough to get bitten so much and 2) if it is the same kid, why isn't there a 3 strikes and you are out sort of rule for biting.

I know they are still little, but that s-- shouldn't fly.

DS1 is being torment at school by one particular boy, and he is tormenting lots of other kids too, and I know the teachers are all on it and I get constant updates on it.
