Bye bye freezer stash?

So for those who commented on my T&P post thank you, I updated it with the most current info. Nothing serious no blockage from the vaccine though with all the checking they did confirm he has thrush. Not sure if I do, I have some mild discomfort now and then when he nursed, isn't constant and doesn't last once he's done, some nipple discomfort some actual breast. I am being treated also, but now I'm not sure what to so with my freezer stash. Not sure if I have it or if I do for how long and I know freezing doesnt kill yeast so I'm at odds at whether to toss it all or not.

And side note I had thawed milk from back in August to try and start using it up, stupid me didn't think to smell or try if first, it was a little more yellow than my milk now but it was only a week it so pp so I thought maybe still due to collustrum but then DS started making his "I don't want this nasty stuff" face he used to do when we first introduced the pacifier so smelled it and smelled some fresh milk I pumped and the frozen stuff smelled sour! Idk it I stored it wrong thawed it wrong or what but if my whole stash is that way I may have to toss is regardless of the thrush

  • You still nurse when you have thrush so I'd assume it's okay to use freezer stash of it. However, point 2. You may have high lipase and that's why it smells sour. Look into that because there might be a way to salvage it.

  • You don't have to throw away your stash, just boil before use. If you don't boil, you run the risk of just giving it back to baby.

  • Don't throw it away! I have to scald my BM bc of the lipase issue. I have over a months worth of unscalded BM. I am going to save it and mix it in w solids when I start making it for LO. The milk isn't bad, just tastes different to them!

  • I don't know about the lipase issue, but I know you don't have to throw milk away due to thrush.  There are anti yeast properties in the milk that protect it.

  • Seems like mixed reviews about the yeast, ill do some more research and keep all my gold for now. Ill look into the lipase thing as well, I remember a post a little while back about that. Hopefully it was just that one bag for whatever reason. The smell was enough to deter me from tasting it, I haven't even tasted my good fresh BM let alone a possibly soapy or sour bottle of it. But I'll definitely be checking before giving to LO now

I've heard of this infamous @AmyG Seems to always have good input when it comes to BF

  • I was under the impression that milk had to be scalded BEFORE being frozen to help treat the lipase issue. Did I misread something in my research? It can be scalded after thawing and let cool before giving to LO?

This is what my lactation consultant at the hospital told me about my milk when I asked her because I have thrush.

  • @AmyG oh that's great info. Thank you. Unfortunately I'm not sure how long I've had thrush. And I've only seemed to have issues with my thawed milk. Milk in the fridge for up to a few days all seems fine doesn't have any smell like the milk I thaw and LO drinks it fine. So in terms of lipase I'm out of luck with my frozen milk? I couldn't bring myself to donate since i don't know how long I've had thrush. LO will sometimes eat a bit but after a couple minutes makes a face like its nasty and won't eat more.
