Trouble TTC

How did you move onto IUI?

Hello,

My RE and I are still agreeing that TI is best for us but how did you know it was time to move onto IUI?  I am completely new to the idea of IUI so maybe I don't understand it completely.  Is this something you do if you have sperm issues?  I have PCOS and my RE believes with Femara and Ovidrel that I will ovulate and with TI I can get a BFP.  I just don't know at what point do you move onto the next idea?

Thanks,

Michelle

Re: How did you move onto IUI?

  • It depends on your diagnosis, age, and how aggressive your RE wants to be. I am unexplained, so my RE wanted to do something more than meds to strengthen my ovulation. The IUI increases the odds that I will be successful in a cycle.

You have PCOS, so getting you to ovulate is the biggest issue. Once you start ovulating, if you don't get a bfp in a few cycles, you will probably start asking about ways of increasing your odds for bfp...and that is when you will seriously think about moving onto IUI.

We are MFI, so it was suggested we go right to medicated cycles + IUI.

I'm assuming your DH had a normal SA?

@Allison7 is right... getting you to ovulate is key.

  • We are unexplained.  We *could* try a TI cycles, but my RE explained that the success rates really aren't that much higher.  We moved straight to IUI.  I feel like if I am pumping my body full of meds and going to all of the monitoring appointments, I want the best chance possible.

  • I believe my husband's SA results were good.  He had it done and they said they couldn't give me his results because he hadn't released them to me.  So I had DH call to release the results to me and the nurse said "Why release them I will give you the results".  My husband forgets everything!!  He told me that they had wanted him to retake the SA due to a small sample but his numbers were good in the sample -- but he never redid it.   My husband (who is a frickin physician) gave me the hardest time ever about going the first time.

When I went back to the RE this Halloween I mentioned it and he looked up my husband's record and said "No, I don't need him to repeat anything".  SO WHO KNOWS!

  • We have PCOS plus mild MFI, we went straight to IUI.  While my RE mentioned TI, everyone felt that it really didn't have much success and with everything else we were putting into it, the IUI decision made the most sense.  My RE also tends to me more agressive (moving to IVF if this IUI isn't sucessful, for example).

    Married 10/06

Baby Girl "C" arrived on 10/07/14 (39 weeks, 6 days)

  • For us, we have about a 1-2% chance of conceiving naturally. With IUI, the chances go up to as high as 15%. IVF is more like 50%.

Given our ages (I am 38 and DH is 41) and our diagnosis, we don't have the luxury of time. So, moving to IUI was a no-brainer once we finished all the testing and received our diagnosis.

  • I told me RE right away that I wanted to be aggressive with treatment. She never offered TI as an option. She told me at my first appointment "I will give you the options and you tell me how you would like to proceed." I said I was tired of waiting and wanted to get going already.
Me 29 DH 30 Unexplained IF TTC since wedding May 2012. IUI #1 11/5/13-BFN.  IUI #2 12/5/13-BFN. IUI #3-12/30/14. All three with Femara CD 3-7 and Ovidrel trigger. +HPT 1/13/14 First +ever!!! • I had my 1st IUI today. After 3 cycles of a treatment not working, my doctor makes you take a cycle off and come in for a consult. I have PCOS & DH has a very good sperm count (supers perm he likes to call it! Lol) We made the decision to move to injectables and DH asked if IUI would improve our chances. My husband loke what the RE had said & made the decision then that he'd like to do IUI. He didn't want to waste any more time with TI. He was tired of cycle after cycle getting disapointed. He just wanted to move forward and be more aggressive. it was then i realized just how hard this has been on him too. He has been so supportive and amazing through all of this that i got on board.
Me: 33 - PCOS & Hypothyroidism DH: 35 - SA is good Married since 2010 (together since 2006) TTC since June 2009 (we knew we would have issues and wanted family right away after we got married). No pregnancies yet. May 2013 - started first round of Chlomid & ovidrel cycle.
  • My RE said IUI right away, and looked at me like I was a loon for even suggesting that we try TI first.  So we went with both.

  • After 3 tries of any fertility treatment, your chances of success aren't great. After 3 TI cycles, it was time to move on to something with better odds. (I have to do a 4th IUI for insurance reasons)
