Out the nose

XP on breastfeeding, but getting no love there.

So LO is 4 months old and just stopped using the nipple shield. Like he ripped it off one day and latched right on without it. However, now my letdown seems to strong for him. A few times he has been nursing and milk has come out his nose. He has also been fussier while nursing - like grunting while still latched- but I thought that was due to teething. Any suggestions for how to make things easier for LO?

You could try laying back and nursing in a slightly reclined position. It makes it a little easier for LO to handle the strong letdown.
This. I nursed while reclined with great success for the same issue. Bonus-I can't tell you how many times I got to doze off.

  • I would look into your positioning as others have mentioned. My LO used to do that really bad when he spit up. I was a little low on my supply so the lactation specialist had me put him on his side while nursing followed up by a bottle on his side. That's what was causing it. As soon as we put him upright while feeding and burped every 1-2 oz it stopped.
