Discouraging Xmas gifts

Sorry, I'm on a Xmas kick already! So, my girls already have a million toys. There are a few little things they could use like new shoes, and a few things DD1 has asked for that I want to buy her so I can see her reaction when she opens them, but really, these children don't need anything and I feel like my home is already overflowing with cheap plastic toys. Friends and family are already talking about what they want to get for them- anyone have any polite ways to discourage gifts?

  • Yup, totally agree... your post actually reminded me to send emails to all of the siblings/ siblings in law to get suggestions for their little ones.

    Amazon wish lists are amazing.

This. I've been pinning things to a Christmas List board on pinterest this year though since not everything I've been keeping track of is on Amazon. So when people have asked for ideas, I link them to the board. It was mostly just to be a reminder for me of what to get but it makes it easy for my family to see what I'm talking about when I give them ideas.

  • I've been discouraging stuff since my LO was born!  For Xmas it will just fall on deaf ears.  I've ran out of room to store LO things already and he is only one!

  • Tell them to get one toy if they insist (because people like shopping) but ask people to contribute instead to a college fund or savings account for your LO.

  • My parents just sent money for us to get the kids something from them. My mom's big on getting things they need, instead of want. So we got DS1 a bike and we're still deciding for DS2.

  • I feel you.  I really would love it if the grandparents bought music classes/gym classes/etc. for L instead of more toys, but I don't think that will happen.  My parents bought a rocking horse for L for his birthday that we still haven't moved up here because there's no room/he doesn't like it yet.

How old are your big kids? We also have a ton of toys, but DD has switched gears to Legos, we can add to her collection and they actually get played with.
DD1 is 3, so she's starting to outgrow a lot of the little kiddie things. She does love Legos, but she just inherited her dad's from when he was a kid, so we have a ton of those, too!
