Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does this seem strange?

I'm not proud to admit it, but I had a very stressful day yesterday and lost my temper on DH in front of DS. I yelled at DH for a few minutes and then broke down and sobbed. DS (16 months) looked surprised at first, and then kind of laughed. Being the paranoid FTM that I am, I'm now wondering if that's normal. I know they aren't supposed to feel empathy yet, but it seems strange that he'd laugh? Or is it just because he has never seen me upset so it's something "new"? Sorry if this is a dumb question. TIA!

  • I'm not an expert, but it doesn't seem that strange.  My DS has smiled when I've been mad and have expressed anger.  I think at that age, they're just figuring out emotions and how to respond.

  • At that age he probably doesn't know for sure how other people express anger or sadness or frustration so he might not have even known what you were doing.  I don't find it strange at all.  I've cried in front of my kids loads of times and that age I'm not sure they really understand what you are doing or know what to feel.
