Thanksgiving!

For the US bumpies- are you getting excited for Thanksgiving?  I can't believe it's a week from today!

What do you do?  Are there any special foods you must have for the holiday?  Special Traditions?  How do you incorporate babies/kids into the holiday?

Recipe request: does anyone have a great flourless chocolate cake recipe?

Re: Thanksgiving!

  • I know, I'm so excited! We got to DH's family house first and then my family has two because my mom side and dads side so it's a pretty busy day. I'm excited for dressing (or if you call it stuffing)! Tradition I guess would be eat, football, and hang out. The kids all play with each other. I can't believe it's her first thanksgiving :)

  • I do love Thanksgiving. My dad's girlfriend is an AMAZING cook. I literally dream of holidays at their place because of the food... and it's one of the few things that can make my husband more amenable to visiting with my dad!

I've been asked to bake bread again this year. I have a no-knead recipe that is so easy it's criminal, but everybody loves it, so I don't have to slave over a fancy pie unless I want to. I wish I had a cake recipe to share! But we're a gluten loving household, alas.

  • I love Thanksgiving! I was actually born on Thanksgiving Day, so we always celebrate with my family, as it also serves as my family birthday party. I do the bulk of the cooking, along with my amazing sous chefs- DH, my dad, and usually my brother. This year, my brother won't be with us, though :( because the country club he works at (as a chef) has 3 huge buffet seatings for the members, and it's a mandatory workday.
Anywho, I love all foods Thanksgiving. My menu this year is turkey (from a local farm, brined for 24 hours to increase flavor and juiciness), two kinds of stuffing- cornbread and brussel sprouts and a sage and sausage stuffing with potato bread, squash custards (heavenly little savory custards!), sweet potato and yukon gold potato au gratin, sauteed green beans, creamed corn, and candied cranberries and then for dessert- pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and some kind of cake (I haven't decided what kind to make yet, lol). I will start cooking this weekend- doing stuff like making the breads and pie crusts, the cranberries and the custard base. Then comes the craziness of transporting all kinds of stuff to my dad's house in NJ. This will be the first year we will have Ben with us, so I'm not sure how we're going to make it all fit! I (semi) joked to DH the other day about renting an SUV for the day so we would have enough room!

Well, that got long! Sorry, I just get REALLY excited about food. It's my passion!

This is the first year I can really enjoy thanksgiving due to switching jobs. I used to work every year either because of an NFL game or a local high school tournament. So woohoo! On actual thanksgiving, we are spending the day hosting a meal at our church for the community. Then on Friday, we are hosting at our house for both sides of my family. We're kind of doing it potluck style where everyone brings something. I'm in charge of the turkey, sweet potatoes and dessert. I love this sweet potato casserole I found a few years ago and am salivating just thinking about it...
This is SO super awesome! This is actually the first year in a while our church hasn't hosted a Thanksgiving dinner. But our deacons group is "adopting" 5 families and providing complete meals to them. I'm in charge of pumpkin pies...

  • I am not. My MIL will make me feel bad because my family won't invite her. I'll end up cooking at my house to appease her.

  • I am very excited about Thanksgiving. For the past few years my aunt and uncle have come from Reno, but this year they could not afford it. So my mom, A and I are going Saturday-Monday for an early celebration with them. A will get her 5th state and get to meet them. I secretly am hoping for a little snow (but not too much). The low is supposed to be 22 so we just need some precipitation! Then we will be doing Thanksgiving at my mom's. She now lives 5 minutes away. We will have turkey, stuffing (with cranberries, sausage and apples), candied sweet potatoes that are amazing, fresh cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and green beans. We will have something for dessert, but I don't know what.

    AL always welcome!

  • We are going to my IL's house from 10am to about 2:30pm and then a half-an-hour drive to my aunt's for 3:00 to around 6pm. Both full Thanksgiving meals. I always eat a little at both. DH stuffs himself at his parents and then just picks at food at my aunt's, nothing against her food as it's wonderful, he just cannot pace himself!

I'm excited that DS can actually eat food, he is eating shredded chicken and turkey, green beans, potatoes, beans, etc so Thanksgiving will be great for him. However he will have his first bite of Grandma's pumpkin pie!

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

    Anniversary

  • I love hearing how everyone celebrates!

We spend Thanksgiving with my family at my aunt's house.  It's where I have spent every Thanksgiving.  DH and I will travel to my hometown (about 1.5 hours away) on Thanksgiving morning.  DS is the first baby on my side of the family since 1988 (!), so everyone is really excited about his first Thanksgiving. My aunt called two weeks ago to say that she'd borrowed a highchair from a friend for A.

I am looking forward to all the traditional food- particularly my aunt's stuffing.  I do have a horrible confession, though- I hate my mom's contribution.  She makes a yam casserole, but she uses canned yams which I cannot stand.  I really wish I could bring a sweet potato recipe I love (made w/fresh sweet potatoes) but that would be blasphemy.

My contribution is typically dessert- my chocolate chip caramel squares and a pie (pumpkin or apple).  But this year after a family member was diagnosed with celiac disease, I am thinking of skipping the caramel squares and trying to make a flourless chocolate cake (hence the recipe request).

I am so excited that A is going to get to try some food straight from the table.

Finally, I am psyched that I only have a two day workweek next week.
