Fluoride?

So at our 6 mo appt the pedi said that now that LO has teeth coming in we should switch from tri vi sol to tri vi flor (prescription) because we have well water and LO should get fluoride for his new teeth. I told DH and he kinda flipped. He thinks it's ridiculous that they want a baby to ingest fluoride. I don't know what to think. Has anyone else been told this? What do you think about it?

Re: Fluoride?

  • I asked my pedi. She admittedly told me that different dentists in the area all recommend different things. She said some recommend it, some freak out if it is recommended.

We have well water. She said to get a jug of tap water from a friend or daycare that is not well water every once in awhile and make sure he gets 'serving' per day. So mon-fri he gets formula bottles at daycare, so no problem. On the weekend he is all BM, she said that was fine.

  • I never thought of that. I could get him tap water at school. DH freaks out that fluoride is the only "non-consensual mass medication" there is. It is kinda weird I guess. Haha

  • We have our appt today and they mentioned at his 4 mo appt that we need to rest our (well) water. Where do you even do that?

  • When we bought our house a company came out and tested our well water. I think you can buy kits at like Home Depot too to do it yourself.

At LO's 6 month appt the Dr gave us a prescription for fluoride. I called my city water dept just to make sure our water did not already contain fluoride. Too much fluoride can cause white spots on their teeth. Maybe I should call my dentist as well.

Just like his vitamin D drops, I can barely remember to give him his fluoride daily. He has only had it once.

  • When I had to start supplementing I asked our pedi about what kind of water to use when making A's formula. She told us to use our tap water because of the fluoride and how it will benefit her in the future.

Just like many others , this will be one of things pedis and dentists won't all agree on.

  • I'm with your DH on this one. But I would do your own research and make the decision with your DH. I personally don't feel that babies even need water until they are eating solids regularly and not BFing/taking bottles.

My dentist says she feels it is ok if the drops are low dose and if he gets fluoride from no other source. So I'll be giving drops when I can remember.

  • We use tap water for formula, but in Germany they gave us a fluoride prescription because their water doesn't have it. We didn't use it, though.

I don't think it's weird... That's how we feel about fluoride. Our family avoids ingesting it.

That is what I meant when I said it is weird. It is weird to me that it is truely non-consenual. I have never thought about it that way but her hubby is right!

That's the same thing I meant. That the giving of fluoride is kinda weird. Not my DH's view. lol
