Ever tapped your own maples?

We have a HUGE HUGE HUGE maple in our yard and we want to tap it but don't have the slightest clue on how to do this.

Anyone ever done it or have a resource (book/link) to offer?

Thanks!

Re: Ever tapped your own maples?

  • i personally am useless... but on my grandfathers farm he and my dad make syrup each year.  i do know that you dont want to tap until we get into a thaw after the freeze -- which in Maine is usually April time frame.  at least thats what they do.  so you may have lots of time to figure it out.  good luck- there is nothing like your own maple syrup!

  • my FIL does. I'm seeing him this evening so I'll try to remember to ask him about it
  • I did as a kid and the biggest thing I remember is that you need a LOT of sap to make maple syrup. ?You can buy the taps and put them in with just a hammer and then attach a bucket. ?But be prepared, a whole bucket full just makes a little syrup!
