Pregnant after IF

Progesterone dropping

My IF nurse called back yesterday with the progesterone results from Monday.  It went from 30.9 to 18.8 in a week.  She said I'm still above the 15 they consider normal, but started me on 100 mg suppositories just so it doesn't drop any further.  They are going to recheck my levels next Monday.  The nurse doesn't sound concerned and said the fact my HCG levels are rising like they should be is a really good thing.  She scheduled my first appointment for December 4.

I know the nurse doesn't seem worried, but I've gone from feeling hopeful about this pregnancy to fearing the worst.  I've been all over Dr. Google (I know, bad idea) and even though 90% of what I read sounds good, I can't shake the fear.  I guess I'm just looking for a little reassurance that this is as minor a thing as my nurse makes it out to be.

Re: Progesterone dropping

  • I would focus on the nurse not being concerned. In my experience (4 losses and two normal pregnancies), when I'm freaked out but the doctor/nurse isn't, it has turned out to be just fine. Plus, many women need progesterone and have normal pregnancies with the extra boost. The only time that they followed my progesterone, my hcg was also plummeting, so I think it's a great sign your hcg is still on the rise. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

  • Your progesterone level is about 15, and they started you on a medication for progesterone support.  I think you will be fine!  Plus your hcg levels are increasing appropriately.  My progesterone level was consistently low, with my first few levels all from 4-10.  I was on Crinone and then added PIO, and I am now 17 weeks pregnant!

  • Thanks ladies!  To go from being told we probably wouldn't get pregnant on our own to a surprise BFP has added to my already crazy PgAL brain.

  • My progesterone was as low as 7 during my current cycle, I am now 27 weeks along. The nurse said the cut off is 7 for their office and that clinics tend to be overly protective with progesterone. I did end up switching to PIO every day at one point because it can be measured more easily in your blood and suppositories are known for cervical irritation which could cause spotting that can cause unnecessary anxiety. Good luck to you, I was beyond worried and obsessed with all levels but it turned out fine.

  • Don't worry about it - mine went from in the high 20s down to 10.  They upped my PIO from 1cc to 1.5cc and it went back up.  Don't worry!  My RE said even 10 was in the normal range, but they like to see it higher.  As long as your beta is still rising you're fine :-)
