Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Worried BFing Mom :/

I know everyone says not to worry about how much milk your baby is getting as long as there are wet/dirty diapers and baby is growing, but I still am lately.  DD is 10 months old and she eats 3 meals per day and nurses 4 times per day.  I work 3 days per week, and lately at work I am only able to pump 3 ounces max.  I don't think it's my pump because I notice my cup size is back to where I was pre-pregnancy (I just noticed this in the last week).  The drop to pumping 3 ounces has happened pretty slowly, not very suddenly so I really don't think it's stress or lack of water.  And I have noticed her appetite for solids has really increased in the last week, too.  Is this just normal weaning?  For those BFing moms out there... about how many ounces of milk do you think a 10 month old should be getting?  I worry about her getting dehydrated....  I offer her water, but usually she drinks only a few ounces.  Just looking for some stories/experiences from other BFing moms with babies this age.  Thanks!

Re: Worried BFing Mom :/

  • DS did that about that age. DD is still nursing a ton. I think DS dropped to morning and night by now. Just follow her lead, or maybe offer the breast more when you're together. I'm lucky if I can get 2 ounces from a pump this time around. I know she gets waaayyy more than that. With DS I'd easily get 6-8 each time I'd pump.
    Don't worry too much.

You could also post this to the breast feeding board or to the kellymom group page on FB.

  • I wouldn't worry too much as long as she is seems full, wetting diapers, etc. I don't respond well to the pump and can only pump 2-3 oz now if its been 4+ hours. I stay at home and she nurses but its quick and less frequent now. Also, just give fruit rich in hydration such as watermelon, yogurt, citrus fruits, etc.. if she won't take much fluids. I really don't think its that big a deal especially if she still nurses well before bed and when she wakes up.

  • This is me too! 2-3 oz from the pump. She only nurses 4 times per day when i am home with three solid meals.
  • Babies are much better at getting milk out than a pump is, so I'm sure she's getting more when she nurses than what you're able to get from pumping. I also have heard that it's normal to start pumping less at this point.

  • We've cut down to 3-4 sessions/day. He eats a ton of solids and drinks water from a sippy all day. I can't pump worth beans at this point. I think DD was nursing 5-6 times/day at 10 mos, but she was a lot more docile than DS...

  • My daughter will be 10 months next week and I am down to pumping twice at work. I'm able to get between 3-4 oz each time but that's going about 4-5 hours between each pumping session. I nurse her right before I leave for the day and then she has:

1 ounce with breakfast (around 9:30)

    3 oz around 11:00

    3 oz around 2:00-3:00

When I get home she is ready to nurse again. She just had her 9 month appointment and the doctor said this schedule was fine and that solids are really more what she should be eating and the milk is just extra. I hope this helps! :)
