Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

teaching at home

Hello Ladies!

My son is almost 15 months old. We are lucky enough to be able to afford for my fiance to stay at home with him during the day. However I want to make sure that he is learning new things. We already read a ton of books to him. We use flash cards. But Im looking for some other ways to teach him. Im all for activities ( this weekend we finger painted our bath tub to play with colors) Really just anything fun and educational you do with your little ones or fun things your child does at day care too.

Thanks!

Re: teaching at home

  • DH and I both work FT, so DS is in DC full time.  My goal is to at least get to PT after our next one comes.  Anyway, if that does end up happening, I know I'll still be looking for places/things to do with LOs to keep them entertained and learning.  My friends who are able to be home take their kids to the library for reading time, they go to the zoo and parks a lot, and they go to various mother/father's morning out activities too.

At DC, I know there is arts & crafts time (so cute to see their work up on the classroom walls!), reading circle, outdoor playtime, etc... I really don't know all they do everyday, but I know DS loves it and is learning tons.  His favorite thing right now is signing "eat" and "more."

My DS is 14 months and I do not sit around and think of ways to teach him.  That's just what life is and what he naturally doing all the time.  Same with my DD who is almost 3.  We go places together like the zoo and museum and parks.  But we also go the grocery store and bank and he learns there too.  Maybe even think of joining a gymboree class or something.  Just follow their lead really.  I cannot imagine doing flashcards with 1 year old.
  • Just be mindful of talking to him about what you're doing and turn everyday things into learning experiences.  Language is what's most important right now so talk to him constantly and he'll pick up things along the way.  "Let's play with this red ball" is much more useful than a flashcard of a red ball, kwim?
