I know I want to ask my sister to be LOs godmother but I dont really want her boyfriend to be the godfather..DH doesnt really have anyone that he wants to be a godfather for LO..can she just have a godmother and no godfather? Or should I find a couple to make LOs godparents?

Re: godparents/confused

  • My understanding is that is does not have to be a couple.

  • Check with your church. The answer varies by parish.

  • They dont have to be a couple. It also varies by religion. For Catholics, they can have one godparent if either sex. If they have 2 godparents, it must be one of each sex. So you may by even need 2 godparents.
  • DS1's godparents are my BIL and my BFF. (both single) DS2's godparents will be another BIL and my sister. (both married)

So in short, there aren't any set rules. Talk to your pastor.

  • I am missing a godmother. The person I was going to use, who was my best friend of over ten yrs decided 3 days before LO was due that she no longer wanted to be friends. So now I need a new friend and godmother.

Also, does not need to be a couple. I am godmother to my nephew, Dh is godfather to our niece

  • I would definitely suggest not having BF be a godparent. There is no commitment there that would guarantee him being in your child's life forever. In my family (just an example), we don't choose anyone who isn't blood related to be a godparent. (Meaning I'd choose my sister who is related to me directly, but if she had a husband we wouldn't choose him.)

I know that is a bit extreme, but that was one of my grandparents few wishes after our uncle got divorced and three kids are now god-mom-less. I am definitely not saying that this is how it has to be, because I know there's a chance of anyone not being in LO's life forever, I just wanted to give an example.

  • We are choosing a couple either...GM is my cousin who is like my sister and GF will be my bil.
  • Hannah's GM is my best friend and her GF is DB's cousin.

I especially wouldn't choose your sisters boyfriend if they aren't married. If they break up there goes the godfather.

This is what my parish's policy is

This depends on the priest. I'm catholic and my niece has two godmothers.

  • I'm catholic and my church doesn't care if it's 1 of each sex or 2 of the same.

  • Also Catholic and DD has 2 great Aunts as godmothers. I think it depends on the priest.
  • Yup, check with your parish/church. My DD has 2 godfathers(my brother and DHs best friend), and one godmother(my best friend).
