Velamentous cord insertion

Anyone have any experience? I'm 20 weeks and my doctors don't seem worried yet but I'm thinking they aren't saying anything because the babies technically aren't viable until 24 weeks. Google hasn't really freaked me out too much, I guess because there's nothing I can do except wait and understand that I probably won't go past 35 weeks and it's an automatic c section. I'm just curious if anyone has experienced this or knows someone....it's very rare. :(

Re: Velamentous cord insertion

  • I'm a L&D nurse and have seen quite a few placentas with vellamentous insertions. The biggest concern is if the waters break since the membranes can tear through the blood vessels causing significant bleeding (why a c-section is required!). Otherwise usually things go pretty smoothly! If your waters do break at some point, go immediately to the hospital!! Good luck.

  • Thanks so much!!! @jenstwins, do most of these women go on bedrest at some point?
  • Yes, one of my girls had a velamentous cord insertion. Her growth slowed toward the end of my pregnancy and she was born 1.5 lbs. smaller than her sister, though I don't know how much of that was due to the positioning of the cord. She is doing well now.

I did not need to go on bedrest at any point and was able to carry until 36w3d. Hope all goes well with your pregnancy!

  • Both my boys have velamentous cord insertion. They are measuring a week behind right now. I'm worried but trying not to stress. Its just a waiting game. I'm glad that everything went well for you. I'm hoping for the same outcome!!
  • My baby B had velamentous insertion and was almost a pound bigger than his brother. repeat csection at 36weeks 4 days when I went into labor (for the 3rd time).

My boy twin had it. We delivered at 37w2d and he weighed 6lbs 5 oz. His sister was 7lbs 12 oz. No NICU time for either and both twins came home with me four days later. I was never on bedrest and I was still walking daily (either in the apartment or while shopping). I was also dancing around with and caring for our then 4.5 year old son. He's still my smaller twin but super healthy and active.

  • This wouldn't usually be a reason for bed rest, but if there are other complications it could tip the balance on the side of caution.

  • It seems like most posts only one twin had the Velamentous cord insertion. Anyone where both babies had it? I appreciate all that you ladies have shared and please don't think I'm dismissing your posts. It just seems more common with one twin having it. I'm just wondering if there's any one with experience of both babies having it?
  • MFM update Today: Baby A has eccentric/marginal cord insertion. They don't seem concerned (yet?) but will be watching every two weeks. Just have to make sure A gets enough nutrition.
So I don't know. Yeah, I'm LOTS of help lol
  • I saw my MFM today too and we discussed the issues but she wasn't overly concerned either. Pretty much continue monitoring me as they have been. And once I hit 32 weeks then we will do fetal monitoring 2x a week. Baby A has the velamentous cord insertion and baby B has a marginal insertion. Pretty much just wait and see.

And we are helping each other by not knowing much!! Lol :) hahaha!!!
  • @tiffy81 I know right! Are they saying anything about B having marginal? They couldn't get B today to see but they think hers is normal. They couldn't even get A's heart rate bc he was towards my back. Both were. Very uncooperative lol I go back dec 5 for anatomy. How far along are u? I'm 18w1d.
  • @momof8inSC Pretty much all they said is its more of wait and see type situation and we are already doing the growth scans so we will continue to do that then the extra monitoring starting at 32 weeks. I hope they cooperate for you on the 5th!!! :-) I'm 22 weeks yesterday.

Other than this scary cord business, is everything else going well with your pregnancy?
  • @tiffy81
Now that I'm on Diclegis and can eat some and not gag or vomit when I see food, I'm doing better lol
19w today and the Diclegis is making me so tired all day. Having a bunch of BH and now my BP is up (after lying down for 4 hrs, it was 140/81). So Ob will not be happy lol I'm excited for the a/s next thurs though! Ok and scared lol

    How are you feeling??
