  • Sorry if it grosses me out. It's easy to make my own baby food and a lot cheaper. Those pouches are pricey and apparently have issues.
  • Sigh... so not the point.

  • I make my own but I do buy the Buddy Fruits only to keep in the diaper bag if I forget to pack any food for him when we go out to dinner.

Fresh foods can have issues too. Look how often veggies have contaminants in them. At least with commercially packaged foods there is a standard and they have to be washed to a certain degree and heated to a certain temp to kill things. So while I do make some of my own food (but not all) I don't think we can necessarily say it's "safer."

Second this. In fact it's why our pedi asked us to use jarred the first two months of solids.

We were told not to make our own spinach, carrots, and something else... Because of high nitrate levels. They said the companies must screen for that and buy veggies from places with lower levels. We can't do that.

  • Though I'm trying not to get flamed and obviously if your pedi advises you to do something you should follow their advice. However, that is not the case for all families. Yes I make all of my own food for DS. I do it because it's how I was raised. I grew up with a European grandma who cooked simply with minimal ingredients of whatever she grew in her garden or what was in season at her little market. My mom only knew that and it's how she cooked for me. My mom is here now and she showed me how to make simple baby foods. We live in an area of great local produce and exceptional farmers markets. I buy local or I buy frozen which is held to the same high standards. But the difference is the preservation method is freezing. Those pouches obviously use other methods and the article in question says that due to manufacturing issues and possible contamination they are recalling their food. I just believe any time you add a new level of handling or processing to food, you add risk. Our personal pedi supports how we feed DS and that is what is important. I apologize if my initial comment came off as insensitive and I understand that everyone has their own preferences and styles and no one method is perfect for everyone.
  • I am very surprised to read that pedis are actually recommending jar food over making it yourself. Wouldn't steaming veggies get rid of any harmful bacteria? Our 6 month appointment is next week so I will ask our pedi then.

For us it was just the first two months (4mos-6mos) as we were introducing new foods. He said if they have a reaction and it's jarred food it removes questions like "was it prepared properly". In his opinion it allows the introduction of foods in as controlled environment as possible. We plan on making our own going forward as long as the pedi clears it, which he will.

And yes - a recall just happened of baby food. Just like recalls of our food all. The time. :)

Bingo. I'm just waiting for news of a clothing recall, so someone can respond, "And that's why I make all my baby's clothes, made from the wool from my sheep, and the cotton from my organically grown cotton field.
I just LOL at this. People get too hung up on this stuff.
